UNIT 3 LESSON 6

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO…  Consider race and ethnicity in the organization of space.  *A lot of the information presented today does not come from your textbook or is re-framed differently from your textbook  **They make WHOLE textbooks on the topic of “Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the U.S.A.” (Which is the book I’m using)  ***They also make WHOLE textbooks on the topic of “Racial and Ethnic Relations,” which is another textbook I’m using.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?  Remember; Human Geography looks at distributions of groups and characteristics of groups.  Race & Ethnicity have traditionally been used to separate groups of people  Physical, Cultural, and Emotional barriers  “Identify against” means finding the “other” and then we define ourselves as not other.  Professional football players tend to be male 21-31, physically fit, and coordinated.  I am none of those things, thus football players are not me, so they are “other”.  Ultimately, social constructs vs. biological  The importance given to race and ethnicity is socially based  Society makes people aware of who they are and treat accordingly

TERMINOLOGY  Race and racial discrimination have driven patterns of settlement and behavior for a long time.  Racism is a feeling against someone based on race it is an ideology and part of the cultural complex.  Discrimination occurs when action has taken place against.  Prejudice is similar to racism, but it is based on an assumption or stereotype  Someone may believe or feel that whites are superior to other people (Racism)  Someone may outright make a hiring choice based on the race of someone (Discrimination)

RACE VS. ETHNICITY

YOU CAN’T READ THIS ON THE BOARD, LOOK AT IT ON YOUR LAPTOP. RACE TENDS TO BE A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT AROUND THE BIOLOGY OF A PERSON ETHNICITY IS A SHARED CULTURAL HERITAGE; MAY IDENTIFY AS MORE THAN ONE ETHNICITY ; LEARNED BEHAVIORS & INCLUDES LANGUAGE

MINORITIES DON’T HAVE TO BE A MINORITY  There are five characteristics of minorities (which also applies to more than race, includes gender and non-Christians in the U.S.)  1. The members of the group experience a pattern of disadvantage of inequality  2. The members of the group share a visible trait or characteristic that differentiates them from other groups.  3. The minority group is a self-conscious social unit  They are aware they are the minority  4. Membership in the group is usually determined at birth  People don’t always want, it’s imposed by others. Think blue for boy or pink for girl  5. Members tend to marry within this group  Best Terms to use: Dominate vs. Non-Dominate Group

CHECK YOUR KNOWLEDGE: CLICK ON YOUR CHOICE, SEE IF YOU’RE RIGHT Hit F5 and your screen will then let you click on which “answer” you think is right Black is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic Spanish is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic Jewish is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic Asian is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic Christian is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic Cuban is: Racial or EthnicRacialEthnic

NON-DOMINATE GROUPS  Racism, Discrimination, and Prejudice are about POWER  Racism is institutionalized meaning that:  Access to resources, opportunity, and choices are limited based on race  Supported by a system (Cultural complex, lots of things go into it)  Institutional discriminations are “the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of society”.  Little things we may not think about:  IQ tests have questions written overwhelmingly by white males. It’s easier for a white and/or male person to respond to questions written by people who have similar experiences.  Dominate groups tend to have fewer landfills, & toxic waste plants near their population.  Dominate groups tend to have more hospitals in their neighborhoods  Harsher sentences for minorities and especially “minority” preferred drugs  That’s why there’s no such thing as “reverse racism” or “reverse sexism”  Non-dominate groups do not have the power to systematically exclude or set-up an institution against  When a non-dominate group acts, the dominate group still retains power

 map based on race, if we have time, go there and keep the map open while looking up things you might consider “bad” to live next to. See if it corresponds to a particular racial group. Example: Use the above link to bring up the Houston map; then I Googled, “Maps of Oil Refineries in Houston”

ACTUALLY…THIS ONE IS UNIQUE This one is a little bit different. In our class and for this course, we will identify Jewish/Jews as an ethnic group. Yet, to be respectful, Jews and a few other groups identify Jews as a “race”; meaning to be a Jew is biological.
