International Day for Tolerance

International Day for Tolerance What is tolerance? UNESCO's Declaration of Principles on Tolerance defines tolerance as "respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.

International Day for Tolerance The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for Tolerance is annually observed on November 16 to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help them understand the negative effects of intolerance.

Background In 1996 the UN General Assembly invited member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance on November 16, with activities directed towards both educational establishments and the wider public (resolution 51/95 of 12 December).

What do people do? The International Day for Tolerance is a time for people to learn about respecting and recognizing the rights and beliefs of others. It is also a time of reflection and debate on the negative effects of intolerance

What do people do? Live discussions and debates take place across the world on this day, focusing on how various forms of injustice, oppression, racism and unfair discrimination have a negative impact on society.

What do people do? Many educators use the theme of this day to help students in classrooms or in lecture theatres understand issues centered on tolerance, human rights and non-violence. These issues are also found in text books, lesson material and other educational resources used for this event

What do people do? Other activities include essays, dialogues and story-telling of people’s personal accounts of intolerance and how it affects their lives

John F.Kennedy "World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man loves his neighbour -- it requires only that they live together with mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement." ~ John F. Kennedy

John F.Kennedy

Building tolerance and trust in diverse communities takes time and commitment

. Tolerance Day is an opportunity to see what progress has been made throughout the year, and rededicate our commitment to promoting tolerance, respect, cooperation and dialogue between different cultures in our communities and between nations

The human family is very diverse, with many different beliefs and cultures and ways of life. Many conflicts in our world are caused when people are intolerant of the ways that others see the world. Learning tolerance is an important cornerstone to creating a better world.

The International Day for Tolerance educates people about the importance of global tolerance.
