Romans 6:16-18, 22 Jim Beasley Sunday, June 5, 2011

 Romans 6:16-18, 22 ◦ “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. [22] But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.”

 Matthew 25:21 ◦ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’”  Colossians 3:24 ◦ “It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”  Matthew 6:24 ◦ “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

 A Slave Is Owned By Someone Else  1 Corinthians 6:20 ◦ “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;”  Acts 20:28 ◦ “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”

 A Slave Is Owned By Someone Else  Titus 2:13-14 ◦ “while we wait for the blessed hope-the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us [purchase our freedom] from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”

 Slavery Means Complete Dependence On the Master For Everything  Romans 11:35-36 ◦ “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? For from him [God] and through him and to him are all things.”  1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ◦ “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, who you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

 Slavery Means Complete and Constant Availability and Obedience to the Master  2 Corinthians 5:9 ◦ “So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.”  Titus 3:1-2,8 ◦ “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. [8] This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.”

 Slavery Means Complete and Constant Availability and Obedience to the Master  Titus 2:9 ◦ “Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them…”  Romans 12:1 ◦ “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.”

 All Needs Provided For  Philippians 4:19 ◦ “And my God will liberally supply ( fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  Matthew 6:25, ◦ “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

 We Have Been Made Sons  Galatians 3:26 ◦ “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”  Romans 8:14 ◦ “because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
