Why should we still read Frederick Douglass today? We should still read Frederick Douglass’ autobiography only because it “reminds us of the infinite worth of every human being.” People nowadays don’t really care about the past and knowing what happened, but if they took the time to read this they might change how they do things today. Everybody will say, “if I lived in that time I would never do what they did,” but what they don’t realize is that every day they could be dehumanizing people without knowing it. Reading this book can open people’s eyes to reality and the past and see that everybody should be treated like a human being, no matter their race, sex, religion, or how they are as a person. There are a few reasons why we should continue reading Frederick Douglass. The most important reasons in my opinion are that “slavery still exists in some parts of the world” and the book “reminds us of the infinite worth of every human being.” We need to realize to some extent that every human being is equal and everyone should be treated equally, instead of putting others down through the act of slavery. Reading someone’s story can persuade the reader to act upon it by experiencing what the author went through. Realization dissolves ignorance.

Example 1 - Advanced RAPT Response By treating their own children as slaves, white masters who impregnated slave women, would “satisfy their lust” and “become both father and master to a large number of valuable slaves.” In other words, the white master could increase his wealth by increasing the number of slaves he owned, and at the same time, he could get away with having sex with slave women without any fear of judgment or legal consequences from the white community.

Example 1 - Advanced RAPT Response Douglass’ move to Baltimore “laid the foundation for everything that followed” because he learned and experienced things he probably wouldn’t have experienced had he stayed at Captain Anthony’s farm. For example, he learned how to read and write and why slaves shouldn’t become educated. It showed different perspectives on life. This is all positive because, for all he knows, he could have ended up dying from severe conditions, but instead he was chosen to leave and experience a different slave life that opened his eyes to the possibility of a better life.

Example 2 - Advanced RAPT Response Education in the hands of a slave was dangerous because of the simple fact that they have been deprived of it. Once they obtained it, there would be no stopping them, making them “unmanageable.” Therefore, white men were fearful that one day they would become inferior, so they kept slaves ignorant. As Douglass noted about white men’s fear, if they gave “an inch [a slave would take]…a mile.”

Example 3 - Advanced RAPT Response Slaves would “be of no value” to their masters if they learned to read and write because they would become smarter than the masters and learn how to fight back with knowledge. Slaves “will become discontent” with their lives, Frederick overheard Mr. Auld say. Slaves were told to believe that they were meant only for work, not to learn and fight for their freedom.
