Use a transition phrase in your response such as… in light of the fact that… which would have led to… because the alternative would have led to… which would have resulted in…

Why should we still read Frederick Douglass today? We should still read Frederick Douglass’ autobiography only because it “reminds us of the infinite worth of every human being.” People nowadays don’t really care about the past and knowing what happened, but if they took the time to read this they might change how they do things today. Everybody will say, “if I lived in that time I would never do what they did,” but what they don’t realize is that every day they could be dehumanizing people without knowing it. Reading this book can open people’s eyes to reality and the past and see that everybody should be treated like a human being, no matter their race, sex, religion, or how they are as a person. R R & A More P T

There are a few reasons why we should continue reading Frederick Douglass. The most important reasons in my opinion are that “slavery still exists in some parts of the world” and the book “reminds us of the infinite worth of every human being.” We need to realize to some extent that every human being is equal and everyone should be treated equally, instead of putting others down through the act of slavery. Reading someone’s story can persuade the reader to act upon it by experiencing what the author went through. Realization dissolves ignorance.

If you skip doing any of these RAPT steps, how does it affect your writing and the person reading your work? Restate the question Answer the question Prove your answer with text evidence Thoroughly explain how your evidence proves your point

RAPT Writing Practice Whenever you speak or write, assume your audience doesn’t have a clue what you are talking/writing about. R If you don’t restate the question somewhere in your response, your audience will spend most of their time trying to figure out what you’re talking/writing about. A If you don’t answer in detail, they will only get a superficial (fluffy) idea of what you’re thinking. P If you don’t use an example or evidence, they will think you don’t really have any proof to back up your idea. T If you don’t thoroughly explain your proof, they will wonder whether it really proves what you’re saying or whether you just threw something out there hoping it will help prove your point.

CH 4: How were slaves affected when they realized people like Gore could get away with murder? Use a transition phrase in your response such as… Which led to the lesson that… Which resulted in slaves learning that… And considering the fact that…slaves learned…

We had a little slave boy whom we had hired from some one, there in Hannibal. He was from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and had been brought away from his family and his friends, halfway across the American continent, and sold. He was a cheery spirit, innocent and gentle, and the noisiest creature that ever was, perhaps. All day long he was singing, whistling, yelling, whooping, laughing -- it was maddening, devastating, unendurable. At last, one day, I lost all my temper, and went raging to my mother, and said Sandy had been singing for an hour without a single break, and I couldn't stand it, and wouldn't she please shut him up. The tears came into her eyes, and her lip trembled, and she said something like this -- 'Poor thing, when he sings, it shows that he is not remembering, and that comforts me; but when he is still, I am afraid he is thinking, and I cannot bear it. He will never see his mother again; if he can sing, I must not hinder it, but be thankful for it. If you were older, you would understand me; then that friendless child's noise would make you glad.‘ - Mark Twain, abolitionist, author who wrote Huck Finn

Etta James "SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT” (First version)" Swing low, sweet chariot, Coming for to carry me home Swing low, sweet chariot, Coming for to carry me home I looked over Jordan, and I what did I see Coming for to carry me home? CH 5: On pages 26 and 27, what were the causes of most of Frederick’s suffering? Use a cause-effect phrase in your response such as… Which would have caused suffering due to… Considering the fact that…slaves would have endured suffering because…

CH 5: Why wasn’t Frederick sad and fearful when he was sent to live with strangers in Baltimore? Use a cause-effect phrase in your response such as… Frederick likely didn’t feel sadness or fear due to the fact/s…. Considering that most children…Frederick…

Example 1 - Advanced RAPT Response By treating their own children as slaves, white masters who impregnated slave women, would “satisfy their lust” and “become both father and master to a large number of valuable slaves.” In other words, the white master could increase his wealth by increasing the number of slaves he owned, and at the same time, he could get away with having sex with slave women without any fear of judgment or legal consequences from the white community.

Example 1 - Advanced RAPT Response Douglass’ move to Baltimore “laid the foundation for everything that followed” because he learned and experienced things he probably wouldn’t have experienced had he stayed at Captain Anthony’s farm. For example, he learned how to read and write and why slaves shouldn’t become educated. It showed different perspectives on life. This is all positive because, for all he knows, he could have ended up dying from severe conditions, but instead he was chosen to leave and experience a different slave life that opened his eyes to the possibility of a better life.

Example 2 - Advanced RAPT Response Education in the hands of a slave was dangerous because of the simple fact that they have been deprived of it. Once they obtained it, there would be no stopping them, making them “unmanageable.” Therefore, white men were fearful that one day they would become inferior, so they kept slaves ignorant. As Douglass noted about white men’s fear, if they gave “an inch [a slave would take]…a mile.”

Example 3 - Advanced RAPT Response Slaves would “be of no value” to their masters if they learned to read and write because they would become smarter than the masters and learn how to fight back with knowledge. Slaves “will become discontent” with their lives, Frederick overheard Mr. Auld say. Slaves were told to believe that they were meant only for work, not to learn and fight for their freedom.

Apostrophe Quiz today “Let’s focus on the future, not the past. It’s time to move on.” are we aiming to re-open the wounds of slavery In other words, history is full of stories of people---and nations---making terrible mistakes.
