Slavery, State Rights and Secession

State Rights and Nullification The power a state has to govern what goes on within its borders. (Decide if they want slaves or not) States felt they could ignore federal laws which they feel violated the Constitution. State authority could “nullify” or cancel national laws

Missouri Compromise Missouri-slave state Maine-free state “magical line set” at 36/20 everything above FREE everything below SLAVE.

Compromise of 1850 California-free. All other western territories VOTE by popular sovereignty to decide. Most northern states ignored the law since they didn’t agree with slavery

Kansas Nebraska Act Originally free states. In 1854 this changed when the act repealed the Missouri Compromise and people in Kansas begin to have a civil war within their state. Nickname “Bleeding Kansas”

Georgia Platform Written to support the Compromise of This helped prevent war and secession in Northern states agreed to return the run away slaves with the Fugitive Slave Act
