Presentation transcript:

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for human rights to be respected and protected for everyone.

Amnesty International has an active membership with more than 1,100,000 members and supporters in over 160 countries. The movement is open to anyone who supports its goals. Amnesty International is concerned only with the protection of human rights in each case, not supporting either the ideology of the government or the beliefs of the victims. Amnesty International

Thousands of people are in prison because of their beliefs. Many are held without charge or trial. Torture and the death penalty are widespread. These abuses - taking place in many countries - demand an international response. The protection of human rights is an international responsibility. Amnesty International

The History In 1961 a British lawyer Peter Benenson read a newspaper report of 2 Portuguese students who were sentenced to 7 years in prison for raising their glasses in a toast to freedom. He wrote an article titled “The Forgotten Prisoners” in which he called for the people to protest against imprisoning people for their political or religious beliefs. Thousands of people responded, sending letters with support, offers of help and more examples of ‘prisoners of conscience’. Within 6 months, a permanent international movement developed and the organization Amnesty International was born.

AMNESTY TODAY In 1977 Amnesty International won a Nobel Peace Prize for being the global voice promoting all the human rights written in our guiding document, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, first adopted in 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Amnesty International plays a specific role in the international protection of human rights. Its activities focus on prisoners.

It seeks the release of prisoners of conscience. These are people imrisoned anywhere for their beliefs, colour, ethnic origin, language or religion, who have not used or advocated violence. It works for fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners and on behalf of such people detained without charge or trial. It opposes the death penalty and torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of all prisoners without reservation.

Amnesty International The universal human rights include: the right to freedom of expression, conscience and religion; the right to freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention; the right to a fair trial; the right to life, liberty and security of person; the right not to be tortured. Amnesty International works to protect these rights by trying to secure the release of prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials in political cases and an end to torture and executions.

Speak out for human rights! Are you angry at human rights abuses around the world but hopeful for a more just future? Then join Amnesty International and help make a difference across the globe. Fight to free prisoners of conscience, abolish the death penalty, stop violence against women and ensure everyone enjoys full human rights. Materials and photos taken from Join Amnesty International
