Chinese Traditions One Chinese tradition is being careful during the holidays. If you break anything during the holidays, it is believed to bring bad luck for the rest of the year. Also, everything has to be clean. When Bandit doesn’t clean up the beans that she spilled and Grandmother calls her in, she thinks she is going to be in big trouble but it was just so she could hear about the letter from Father.

Why Bandit changed her name Bandit changed her name because her original name wasn’t American. Since she was going to America, she wanted to have an American name; so she told her Grandfather that she wanted her name to be changed to Shirley Temple. Now her name is Shirley Temple Wong.

The Journey of 10,000 miles Bandit called the trip from China to New York the journey of 10,000 miles even though it wasn’t actually 10,000 miles. She called it that because it took so long to get to New York. It did take a very long time, (a month and 4 days) and She was very excited to see America and her Father so it probably seemed like longer.

Differences between China and America There are tons of differences between China and America. One of them is how the two different cultures tell time. In America, they use clocks and months, years and days. In China, they use the year of the boar, dragon, etc. Another difference is In China, they go to school based on how many years of school you have completed instead of age. Also, in China the women bound their feet because it was thought beautiful to have small feet. In China, you aren’t allowed to break anything during the holidays because it is believed to be bad luck for the next year but in America, we break a lot of things during the holidays, like ornaments. Finally, in China, they punish the children much more harshly, for little things.

China’s Little Ambassador Shirley Temple Wong is the only Chinese girl at school. That is why Mother called her China’s little ambassador; she was representing China so she needed to be good.

The First Day of School Shirley likes her teacher, Mrs. Rappaport, who’s hair is red and sticks up. Shirley frequently opens and shuts her eyes because she is trying to wink. At lunch, some kids invite Shirley to go the store for lunch with them. After they get back, Shirley realizes that she could have gotten in a lot of trouble.

Shirley’s Ambassadorship Shirley is afraid that she is going to lose her ambassador. She is afraid because at lunch, she went with the kids that went to the store. She didn’t know they could get in trouble for it so she shouldn’t have worried about it.

The End Goodbye! See you next time!
