SUSTAINABLE PROCESS INDUSTRY EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETTIVENESS TROUGH RESOURCE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY Solar cooling systems

2 TECSOL is among the engineering and R&D important players in this sector (as well as some other R&D institutes such as Fraunhofer ISE in Germany or EURAC in Italy) for more than 15 years. TECSOL is in the forefront of the solar cooling technology (both Thermal and Photovoltaic) TECSOL

Background information In Europe, the actual trend in energy consumption for heating & cooling is leading to a probable decrease on the heating side and an increase in the cooling side (ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/etp/docs/rhc-vision_en.pdf, see p.11)ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/etp/docs/rhc-vision_en.pdf Besides, no renewable energy at the moment is really convincing to deeply manage the renewable cooling challenge. Solar source looks to be very interesting for cooling because of the natural adequation, especially in buildings. Several researches have been made on the solar cooling approach, quite exclusively with a solar thermal angle. Unfortunately, economically speaking, no real cost competitive solution has been identified, especially in the range of less than 100 kW cooling. Horizon 2020 LCE 2 topic related to Solar cooling systems: /topics/1123-lce htmlhttp://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020 /topics/1123-lce html) 3

Project Idea Concept TECSOL has identified that, with the important cost decrease of the solar photovoltaic sector, the coupling solar PV+ reversible heat pump will be a very promising solution where technical efforts have to be made on the control, storage and grid interaction side. On the solar thermal cooling approach, interesting perspectives can be seen on the large system size (several hundred kW cooling) but in Europe, this implies a very optimal usage of all the solar thermal kWh produced, both for cooling and heating (especially in heating/cooling networks). In this last item, a conjunction with the SPIRE initiative could be accurate after identifying if some Process Industry applications can be technically and above all economically compatible with the solar thermal cooling concepts. 4
