Basic Skills: status, accomplishments, next steps Barbara Illowsky, Ph.D. Academic Affairs, CCCCO November 1,

Thought for the day! "Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." --Abigail Adams, 1780 (Evelyn Metz’ signature, MSJC) 2

Challenge 5 minutes (timed) If you have seen this before, just observe (ACTIVITY REMOVED FOR PUBLIC POSTING!) 3

Observations 100% Success? Beginning chaos? Silos work? Creativity? Leaders? 4

Lessons Learned Challenges Barriers Motivation Solutions 5

Back to our students…. Challenges Barriers Motivation Solutions 6

Fabulous… o.html?mid= o.html?mid=1474 Dr. Tina Seelig 7

Barbara’s thoughts and observations Poppy Copy -> 4 strands emphasized it takes a village BSI -> brought students with basic skills needs to the forefront & into the public -> encouraged cooperation & creativity between student services & instruction 8

More thinking… BSI -> brought use of data to forefront -> inspired innovation -> more time thinking about student success -> pilots, pilots, pilots -> educated “us” about needs & value of CTE -> educated “us” about non-credit basic skills 9

What works? Integrated counseling Integrated basic skills with CTE Integrated tutoring NO MORE SILOS!! 10

How do we decide? Use data Increase successful practices Increase successful programs Scale up successful practices & programs Adapt from other colleges Slow down pilot use … for now 11

Opportunities for improvement Instruction & Student Services still compete for funding Too many pilots without making decisions Put the $$ into programs that work Clean up CB21 coding 12

A few more opportunities … Tendency to stop successful practices when the $$ gets tight Tendency to stop professional development when the $$ gets tight 13

… the big one! Students don’t do optional! Kay McClenney It is OUR responsibility to require …. 14
