FROM RENOVATION COMES INNOVATION : USING UNIVERSITY CHANGES TO HIGHLIGHT LIBRARY SUCCESSES MAUREEN WILLIAMS NEUMANN UNIVERSITY

Background and Context of Neumann University Library’s role on campus What caused us to step out and change our role on campus, and the perception of our role on campus How we accomplished this change and how we will continue to be at the forefront of University actions

Previous Role on Campus Library (and Librarians) flew under the radar Info Literacy was strong, but concentrated Tenure not required; ‘Publish or Perish’ not part of University culture Many on campus had an outdated, ‘Romantic’ view of Library

Renovation! Losing ½ of print collection Losing 1/3 of floor space Losing Information Literacy Classroom (This was bad news) Within the Library, we were frustrated, anxious We quickly reevaluated our roles and started moving forward

Renovation  Attention Reaction from campus was troubling Focus was on loss of books – Not our most pressing concern We were seen as victims, with our place in the University out of our control Perception of the Library was inaccurate

Rethinking Our Role On Campus We contributed to the University, but few people knew, or asked about it What was asked of us in reports did not reflect our impact or value Prove our worth, hopefully change others’ perception to seeing us as impactful, contributing members of University (VAL Report)

How can we create this new identity on campus? Proactively and regularly inform the University community of the impact we make Link what WE do to what THEY do (and what the University expects from us) Raise the bar for what is expected of us from Administration (VAL Report)

Newsletter – Tell everyone what we want them to hear Faculty Toolbox – Show how Information Literacy affects their classes and the curriculum libguides.neumann.edu/toolbox Core Curriculum Revision – Get the Library involved in the learning outcomes and rollout of the new Curriculum

Keep the Library in the University discussion Newsletter is sent out regularly Faculty Toolbox is updated with new assignments, learning outcomes Stay involved in Core Curriculum discussion Make formal reports more mean- ingful, demonstrating real impact
