Georgia Performance Standards  Science: S3E1- Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and minerals.  Math: M3D1- Students will create and interpret simple tables and graphs. M3D1- Students will create and interpret simple tables and graphs.

Do you know the difference between a rock and a mineral? In this lesson, you will become a geologist. Your job is to investigate the differences between a rock and mineral. Have fun!! In this lesson, you will become a geologist. Your job is to investigate the differences between a rock and mineral. Have fun!! Granite-rock Gold-mineral

Types of Rocks Sedimentary shale conglomerate Metamorphic slate gneiss Igneous granite basalt

Sedimentary Rocks  Broken rocks, shells, mineral grains, and other materials are all sediments.  All these sediments collect in layers to form sedimentary rocks.

Metamorphic Rocks  Made by extreme pressure and/or heat  Can you identify either rock?  Can you identify either rock?

Igneous Rocks  These rocks are formed from cooled magma.  Magma is melted rock deep inside the earth.  Magma on the crust of the earth is called molten lava.

Discover How Rocks are Formed  Click on the website below to learn more about the three types of rocks and how they are formed. ml

Sedimentary IgneousMetamorphic Both Experience heat and pressure. All are made of minerals. They are both pressed down.

What are Minerals? A mineral is a solid material made of one substance, that occurs naturally on Earth. Most of the common minerals are made of crystals. Look at all of my gold, I’m rich!!

Gold The first gold rush in America was in Dahlonega, Ga. in the 1830’s. Used to make money and jewelry. Calcite Forms in cubes and rectangular prisms. Used in toothpaste, soap, glue, and gum. Talc It is one of the softest minerals. Talcum Powder Diamond Hardest rock in the world. Used to make jewelry. Silver One if man’s favorites, shiny and hard to find. Used to make jewelry and coins.

After surveying the class about our favorite gemstone, here are the results: Which gemstone does our class like the most? The least?

Lets Do Math! Read the graph below. Create two questions about the various items and there hardness according to Moh’s hardness scale. Exchange your questions with a classmate and check their answers.

Lets Build a Volcano!! First, view this erupting volcano video (click on real media player and be patient). canoes/phenomena.html canoes/phenomena.html Now, lets have fun building your own volcano. fnature/interactive/index.html?section=v fnature/interactive/index.html?section=v

Rock Cycle Song (Sing to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat") (Sing to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat") SEDIMENTARY rock Has been formed in layers Often found near water sources With fossils from decays. Then there's IGNEOUS rock Here since Earth was born Molten Lava, cooled and hardened That's how it is formed. These two types of rocks Can also be transformed With pressure, heat and chemicals METAMORPHIC they'll become.

National Geographic has hired you to investigate the uses of minerals used in your daily life. First, research the minerals you use. Then, create a chart telling me the name of the minerals and how it is used. Finally, survey your classmates to see what minerals they use daily and create a pie graph with your results. Have fun! Have fun!
