Questions 13-18 Jacqlyn N Huy N James C Tina L Judy N TJ A Michelle X Gabriel A

13. What did she think of Monrovia 13. What did she think of Monrovia? Why did the presidential palace of Monrovia resemble the White House? Nettie says there are a lot of White French people in Monrovia and that the president of Senegal has a lot of whites in his cabinet. Monrovian presidential palace looks like the American White House because of its structures and how the cabinet meet to discuss how to govern the well being of the country.

14. What is Celie’s reaction to Nettie’s letters 14. What is Celie’s reaction to Nettie’s letters? How does Shug reason with Celie? Celie’s reaction is shocked and sad. Shug reasons that Celie shouldn’t kill Mr.____ and that Nettie is coming home soon, so she wouldn’t want to see her sister behind bars.

15. How does Shug distract Celie from her grief and give her something productive to do? What do you do when something is bothering you? How do you keep your mind off it? Shug distracts Celie by suggesting to make her own pants. When something is bothering us, we try to talk it out and keep it off our mind by distracting ourselves with another busy task.

16. Why does Celie worry about her children’s intelligence 16. Why does Celie worry about her children’s intelligence? Is this a rational fear? Celie worries about her children’s intelligence because Shug says that children born from incest are “part of the devil’s plan”.

17. How were Nettie and other missionaries welcomed to the village 17. How were Nettie and other missionaries welcomed to the village? What can you discern about the culture of the Olinka’s from this passage? Nettie and the other missionaries were crowded around by villagers. The curious village folks first stared, then touched Nettie and Corrine dress and then their hair. The Olinka’s are very religious people who worship the story of the roofleaf. They consider the roofleaf equal to God.

18. Why do you think the Olinka’s believed that girls should not be educated? Why didn’t whites in the South think African Americans should be educated? How are these reasons similar? The Olinka’s may have believed that the future of the woman should be decided by the husband. Similarly, the whites did not want African Americans to be educated to reduce threat of rebellion, because they believed that their fates should belong to the hand of white people.
