5/2/2015PPT developed by Debra A. Wilson 3 What Active Listening Is Hearing is passive Listening is active ACTIVE LISTENING MEANS YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION !!!!! Don’t get distracted by other things. Focus attention and concentrate on what is being said. Ask questions to be sure you understand what is being said. Repeating what the speaker says, and not interrupt while the speaker is talking.

They must listen for the main point of the message, listen for details, and make decisions about the importance of the message. With a partner, try the exercises taking turns being the reader and the listener. Listeners should not read along. After hearing the passage, the listener should answer the questions on the next page Handout #2b.

It is used to send signals over great distances, especially from one ship to another and from ship to shore. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a different position of the hands and flags. Handout #3b -Practice the letters then use your skill on this handout by translating the message. Handout #3c- Cut out the flags and send messages to the class to see if they are truly “listening”.

Wilson 9 Active Listening Tips Handout #4- 1) Make up your mind to pay attention. 2) Focus on the speaker and what he/she is talking about. 3) Avoid distractions. 4) Don’t interrupt. 5) Take notes to help you remember what the speaker said. 6) When you are being given directions, listen for: what you are supposed to do, how you are to proceed, when it is due. 7) Put what you hear into your own words, to make sure you understood correctly.
