Outreach awareness to our target groups

Marine Litter What is Marine Litter ?  Marine litter is the collective term for any man-made object present in the marine and coastal environment.  They consists of mostly very slowly degradable waste items — items made of persistent materials such as plastic, polystyrene, metals and glass — from a large number of different sources.

.  Marine litter are items that are either discarded directly, thrown or lost directly into the ocean or brought indirectly into the ocean by rivers, sewerage, storm, water or left by the people on the beaches and the shores

Where do we Get Marine Litter?  Marine litter is found in the marine and coastal environment  Marine litter is found floating on the water surface, Almost 90 per cent of floating marine debris is plastic.  Marine litter is found lying on the beaches and the shores

.  Marine litter is found on the seabed both in the shallow coastal areas and in much deeper parts of the seas and the oceans  Marine litter can as well be found mixed on the water column

Sources of Oceans-Sea Based Marine Litter  Merchant shipping, ferries and cruise liners.  Fishing vessels.  Military fleets and research vessels.  Pleasure craft.  Offshore oil and gas platforms.  Fish farming installations

Sources of Land Based Marine Litter.  Municipal landfills (waste dumps)  Riverside transport of waste from landfills or other sources along rivers and other inland waterways (canals).  Discharge of untreated municipal sewage

.  Industrial facilities: Solid waste from landfills, and untreated waste water.  Tourism (recreational visitors to the coast beach-goers

.

threats to wildlife from marine litter Primary.  Entanglement  Ingestion Other Threats  Smothering of the seabed  Accumulation and dispersion of toxic substances  Environmental changes due to persistent species

Marine Litter Also Can Be Dangerous To People`s Property And livelihood. Examples :-  Fishing boats and gear  Safety risks for people at sea  Damage to cooling water intakes  Contamination of beaches  Contamination of harbors  Health hazards to people  Injuries to grazing cattle

How Marine Litter Affect Grassroots Women.  Livelihoods  Economical Gender Based Violence  Health  Climate Change.

Procedures To Be Taken  Awareness should be created to the society that, to reduce or prevent marine litter are part of a larger issue which concerns each and everyone — that of waste management in society as a whole.  Inflexible law for the offenders and heavy penalties.

.  Merchant ships, offshore platforms, pleasure craft  Fishing vessels  Households  Beach-goers, campers etc

. Thank You For Listening God Bless You. Betty Sharon
