In Regent House litter is a Problem. People eat their lunch and leave the wrappers there. The outside area is particularly bad because the school is so big. Round the lockers is the worst due to all the pupils picking up books for the day ahead and leaving snack wrappers there. In the morning. THIS MEANS LITTER

About Litter Litter is Illegal. The council picks up 800 tonnes of litter that were lying on the street each year! The most common type of litter is cigarette butts. It spreads disease!

Keep our world clean!

Newtownards is an area of outstanding natural beauty Do we respect the area in which we live?

This what Newtownards could look like Clean and tidy with no litter

This what Newtownards does look like Untidy with lots of litter

How do we know how to prevent littering? The Ards Borough Council put up signs such as these and give talks to primary and secondary schools. This is as litter is caused by children. These talks warns the children what litter does and stops them from littering in the future and keeps the streets clean for everyone!

!Marine Litter! Get it Sorted!

The problem Apart from being an aesthetic (visual) problem, marine debris poses a health risk to beach visitors and can have severe environmental impacts on the local wildlife such as birds, mammals and turtles. Wildlife may be smothered, entangled in fishing lines, ingest litter or become coated in oily residues. Similarly, coastal and marine plants may also be smothered by debris. Marine litter is a global problem which has obvious local impacts on beaches worldwide. Marine debris/pollution comprises a wide variety of materials (e.g. crisp packets, cans, plastic bottles, oil drums, trawler nets, fishing lines and disposable nappies), and originates from a number of sources including direct littering by tourists, discarded waste from fishing vessels, sewage discharges and illegal dumping by ships. Similarly, it may be carried to the sea via rivers and streams and subsequently washed up on local beaches Marine debris may also have implications on the local economy as a result of 'ghost fishing' (where fishing nets such as seine nets may be lost from fishing vessels but continue to drift through the water entangling and killing marine life and fish ), lost recreation & tourism revenue and cleanup costs.

The Simple Solution

Evidence suggest adults are the main culprit but many children drop litter as well

Litter is mostly dropped by adults but many children drop litter still. Adults should be setting a example.

There is a lot of litter outside school and it is getting out of hand.

Is this want you want to live in?

What can you do to help?

Don’t drop litter!

All of us need to help the environment and play our part in keeping the world a healthy place to live. After all it is our town and country and we want to keep it looking well. Or
