Haley’s Family Farm

My name is Haley. I live on a farm. In the spring, a lot of the animals give birth to babies. I help my dad and mom count the new babies. We use fractions on our farm to compare how many animals we had originally to how many animals we have after spring births and how many we sell and have left after some are sold.

On our farm, we originally had four cows

In the spring, the cows give birth to calves. This spring, three cows gave birth to one calf each, but one cow gave birth to two calves. Will you help me count the total number of calves? There are 5 calves total.

What fraction of the four cows gave birth to 2 calves? There are 4 cows total, 1 of the 4 cows gave birth to 2 calves. The fraction can be written two ways, with numbers 1/4 or with letters one-fourth. 1

We can rearrange the cows to look like the fraction 1/ The bottom of a fraction is called the denominator. Since there are 4 cows total, they all belong in the denominator. The top of a fraction is called the numerator. In this fraction, the numerator represents the 1 cow that had 2 calves.

=

What fraction of the four cows gave birth to 1 calf? There are 4 cows total, 3 of the four cows gave birth to 1 calf. We can write this fraction 3/4 or three-fourths.

We can rearrange the cows to look like the fraction 3/ The bottom of a fraction is called the denominator. Since there are 4 cows total, they all belong in the denominator. The top of a fraction is called the numerator. In this fraction, the numerator represents the 3 cows that had 1 calf each

= 2 3 4

We have five calves. How many cows and calves do we have all together? We have four cows plus five calves which totals nine = 9

What fraction of the total nine are calves? There are 9 cows and calves total. Out of the 9 total, 5 of them are calves. We write this fraction 5/9 or five-ninths.

We can move the calves and cows to look like the fraction 5/ numerator denominator 5 9 =

What fraction of the total nine are cows? There are 9 cows and calves total. Out of the 9 total, 4 of them are cows. We write this fraction 4/9 or four-ninths.

We can move the calves and cows to look like the fraction 4/ numerator denominator 4 9 =

We had 4 cows and they gave birth to 5 calves in all. We now have 9 in our herd of cattle Dad will sell 2 of the calves after they reach 6 months old, what fraction of the herd will he have sold? He will have sold 2 of the 9. We write this fraction 2/9 or two-ninths.

6 When dad sells 2 of the calves, what fraction of the herd do we keep? He will have sold 2 of the 9. We will keep 7/9 or seven-ninths. 1 2 Sold

On our farm, we have five horses. In the spring, the horses give birth to colts

Three of the five horses gave birth to 2 colts each. The other two horses gave birth to 1 colt each

What fraction of the 5 horses gave birth to two colts? Three of the five horses gave birth to 2 colts each. We write this as a fraction 3/5 or three-fifths.

What fraction of the 5 horses gave birth to one colt? Two of the five horses gave birth to 1 colt each. We write this as a fraction 2/5 or two-fifths.

When the colts reach 6 months old, Dad plans to sell 6 of the colts. What fraction of the colts is dad planning on selling?

We have 8 colts. Dad plans on selling 6 of the eight colts. We write this fraction 6/8 or six-eighths.

When the colts reach 6 months old, Dad plans to sell 6 of the colts. What fraction of the colts is dad planning to keep? We have 8 colts. Dad plans on selling 6 of the eight colts. If we subtract 6 from 8 the answer gives us the number of colts dad is planning to keep. 8 – 6 = 2 We write this fraction 2/8 or two- eighths. Sold

On our farm, we have two pigs. In the spring, they give birth to piglets. 2 1

If 2/23 is the fraction of pigs out of the total number of pigs and piglets, how many piglets did the pigs have all together this spring? 2 1 The denominator of the fraction is 23 and represents the total number of pigs and piglets. If there are two pigs represented by the numerator 2, then 23 subtract 2 equals the total number of piglets.

One pig gave birth to seven piglets and the other pig gave birth to fourteen piglets = 21 The total number of piglets equals

What fraction of the total 23 pigs and piglets are piglets? There are 23 total pigs and piglets. Of the total 23 there are 21 piglets. We write this fraction 21/23 or twenty-one/twenty-thirds.

We can rearrange the pigs and piglets to look like the fraction 21/

Dad will sell 3/4 of piglets after they reach 8 weeks old. How many piglets will dad sell? Three-fourths of the piglets means dad sold 3 of every 4 piglets. So we group the piglets into groups of 4. We have one piglet left over which is 1 of the needed 4 to make another group which is 1/4 or one-fourth.

We group the piglets into groups of 4. We have one piglet left over which we give to my uncle He keeps it to take to the state fair. We now can take away 3 out of each group of 4. We will keep 5 piglets and the 2 pigs we originally had. 1 2

On our farm, we have seven sheep. In the spring, they give birth to lambs. 12

If the numerator of this fraction 7/ 22 represents the number of sheep and the denominator represents the total number of lambs and sheep, then how many lambs did the sheep have all together?

If the numerator is the number of sheep and the denominator is the number of sheep and lambs, then subtracting the numerator from the denominator gives us the total number lambs the sheep had all together. 22 – 7 = 15 lambs

One sheep gave birth to three lambs, what fraction of the number of sheep gave birth to three lambs?

There are 7 sheep. Of the seven sheep, 1 gave birth to three lambs. We can write the fraction 1/7 or one-seventh

Six sheep gave birth to two lambs each, what fraction of the sheep gave birth to two lambs?

There are seven sheep. Of the 7 sheep, 6 gave birth to two lambs each. We can write this fraction 6/7 or six-sevenths.

When the lambs reach 6 months old, dad plans to sell 8 of them. What fraction of the total herd (lambs and sheep) does dad plan to sell?

There are twenty-two lambs and sheep. Of the 22 sheep and lambs, 8 lambs are planning to be sold. We write this fraction 8/22 or eight- twenty-seconds.

My cat had 7 kittens. When a cat has kittens, as a group they are called a litter. Of the kittens, 3are white, 2 are yellow, 1 is black, and 1 is brown. What fraction of the litter are white? What fraction of the litter are yellow? What fraction of the litter are black? What fraction of the litter are brown? There are 7 kittens. Of the 7 kittens, 3 are white. We write this fraction 3/7 or three- sevenths. There are 7 kittens. Of the 7 kittens, 1 is brown. We write this fraction 1/7 or one- seventh. There are 7 kittens. Of the7 kittens, 1 is black. We write this fraction 1/7 or one-seventh. There are 7 kittens. Of the 7 kittens, 2 are yellow. We write this fraction 2/7 or two- sevenths. Mother Cat

There are 7 kittens in the litter. There is 1 mother cat. If we add the mother cat and the litter of kittens. How many cats and kittens do we now have? 1 cat + 7 kittens = 8 total What fraction of the total are kittens? What fraction of the total is a mother cat? Of the total 8, 7 are kittens. We write this fraction 7/8 or seven-eighths. Of the total 8 cat and kittens, 1 is a mother cat. We write this fraction 1/8 or one- eighth.

The fraction 1/8 looks like this.

The fraction 7/8 looks like this.

When the kittens reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give all the kittens (1 litter) away. What fraction of the kittens am I giving away? There are 7 kittens total. If I give all the kittens away, I am giving 7 of the 7 away. We write this fraction 7/7, seven-sevenths, or 1 whole litter.

As with cats and kittens, dogs giving birth to puppies are considered a litter also. How many puppies are in the farm dog’s litter? There are 5 puppies in her litter.

If we add the mother dog and the litter of puppies, How many do we have in total? There are 6 all together. What fraction of the total are puppies? What fraction of the total is a mother dog? Of the total 6 dog and puppies, 5 are puppies. As a fraction, we write, 5/6 or five-sixths. Of the total 6, 1 is a mother dog. As a fraction, we write 1/6 or one-sixth.

When the puppies reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give 4 of the puppies away. If I give away 4 puppies, what fraction of the puppies am I going to keep? There are 5 all together. If I give away 4, I am keeping 1 puppy. The 1 puppy written as a fraction is 1/5 or one-fifth of the puppies.

When the puppies reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give 4 of the puppies away. If I give away 4 puppies, what fraction of the puppies am I going to keep? If I give away 4, I am keeping 1 puppy. We can rearrange the puppies to look like the fraction 1/5. = 1 5

How many, of all the animals (including the animals we originally had and those born) did we keep after some were sold or given away? What fraction of the animals did we keep compared to all the animals we originally had and those born?

How many animals, of all those born, did we sell or give away? What fraction of all the animals born did we sell or give away?
