Goal 1 A Youth Centre is developed that offers specific services for young people. A place for young people to socialise in the weekends, afterschool, and holidays Goal 2 Young people have a safe place to socialise and access to accommodation for overnight emergencies Four Main Goals for the Katikati Community Goal 4 Young people are visible and connected to the community, its services and activities. They are included in decisions that impact on them locally. Goal 3 To improve youth employment and training links available locally so that young people can choose to stay living in the community successfully.

Goal 1 To develop a Youth Centre that offers specific services for youth. A place for young people to socialise and access all the services they may need to reach their full potential. Who are the Partners we are working with to reach this goal? LEAD: Katikati Resource Centre, Local Council members, WBDC Staff, young people, youth social services, health services, Katch Katikati staff, Te Runganga a Ngai Tamawhariua Central Government, PTEs, local community groups, Volunteer Agencies, Churches Progress to date: Western Bay Council held a full meeting with all the stakeholders to discuss and get agreement on the community priorities so that Katikati had Stakeholder endorsement to proceed. Local buildings have been scoped for size, location, suitability and price. A Field Trip have taken place to have a look at the services being offered in similar towns. Local support services and activities now on-board to broaden options for young people DHB youth health services will be returned. A Job Description for a Katikati Youth Co-Ordinator has been drawn up to include in funding proposals to both Council and Philanthropic organisations. These options are currently being scoped. – Part funding has been confirmed from WBDC resources. Work is being undertaken to develop the services that will be offered and assess what local assets can be utilised. The First youth lead event has taken place with 4 more planned throughout the holidays. Funders approached and receptive to supporting this Goal. WBDC,BOP DHB, Local Service Providers, Local Businesses, Community Groups, PTEs, BayTrust, and TECT.

Goal 2 Young people have a safe place to socialise and have access to accommodation for overnight emergencies Who are the Partners we are working with to reach this goal? LEAD, Maori Wardens, young people, police, schools, health providers, Marae, Possibly CYFs, Local Councillors, Council officials, National Collective of Maori Wardens, local community groups, Philanthropic organisations Progress to Date: The Katikati Community Board allocated $10, to start the funding necessary to a facility. A vacant house has become available that is close to the high school and Resource Centre. The Maori Wardens are now the tenants and have now moved in. Although this is not a permanent funding solution, it is an interim measure for the next 6-12 months. Local Community volunteer groups have donated equipment for the house including computers, desks and a TV. Young people now have a homework club available outside of school hours and its in high demand. Funders approached and receptive to supporting this Goal. TPK, Western Bay District Council, TECT,

Goal 3 Improve Youth Employment and Training links available locally so that young people can choose to stay living in the community successfully. Who are the Partners we are working with to reach this goal? LEAD: Katikati College, Gateway training, Employers, MOE, Local Business, Priority One, KGI, MBIE, Alternative Education Providers, BOP Polytech Progress to Date College Board of Trustees have given permission for Katikati College to utilise some vacant land to develop a horticulture block. The local Principal has approached MOE to confirm protocols for increasing their curriculum to reflect more horticulture and associated education courses. Priority One are now writing up a feasibility study in conjunction with MBIE to develop a wider regional training facility to support all of the horticulture sector. Local meetings have been held with Iwi, local businesses, Priority One, PTEs and BOP Poly to confirm support and relevance of proposal. Funders approached and receptive to supporting this Goal MOE, TECT, KGI, MBIE, Local Employers, Priority One

Goal 4 Young people are visible and connected to the community, its services and activities. They are included in decisions that impact on them locally. Who are the Partners we are working with to reach this goal? LEAD Katikati Resource Centre, young people, Katch Katikati, Te Runganga a Ngai Tamawhariua, local health and social service providers, church groups, Plunket, WBDC, MYD BOPDHB, Ngai te Rangi Progress to date: A workshop has been held in November, run by MYD with a group of young people who represent a range of youth from Katikati. The purpose of this workshop was to identify young leaders who will be involved in the planning of Hub and a summer activities plan. Young people have been involved in the fieldtrips, so that they can gain an understanding about what activities and services could be run out of the facility and understand the processes that need to be put into place to make it happen. Ngai Te Rangi Health and Social Services have agreed to re-establish a youth health service in the community once a week. Funders and supporter approached and receptive to supporting this Goal MYD, Young People, Katikati College, Katikati Resource Centre, Plunket, Ngai Te Rangi Health and Social Services

Next Steps: Goal One: next steps Organise a presentation and proposal for the Community Board and WBDC regarding a part- time Youth Co-Ordinators position. – Research who else may be able to fund this role. Finalise the J.D and make sure its able to be developed as the role progresses. Continue scoping buildings and make plans for the one considered suitable by the group. Develop relationships with potential funder/stakeholders for the facility Continue to develop relationships with local organisations and groups that can assist us to offer services before the facilities are confirmed and developed. Develop a schedule/plan of youth weekend/holidays activities for this summer utilising all the local resources already available. Goal Two: next steps Assess how this service can be provided in the community for a longer period of time. What other funding may be available to support this service, what do we need to set up to make it and the accommodation sustainable? Develop an Engagement and Services Sheet with the Maori Wardens so that we can assess how this extended service is working for young people in Katikati. As offered by the Maori Wardens, develop a homework hub in this facility to help YP who don’t have access to computers or study spaces at home.

Goal Four – next steps Follow – up with the Workshop undertaken by MYD to keep young people engaged. Investigate using Becks (Youth Worker from Tauranga) to work with a group of identified young people about summer activities. Arrange in conjunction with High School and Community Groups a Katikati Youth Awards ceremony for the end of Summer Work actively with organisations supporting YP to keep them included in activities being planned. Develop relationships with local media to promote profiles of young people doing well within the community Goal Three- next steps Continue to receiving updates from this sub-group about progress. Gather support when requested, for additional resources Continue the links with Katch Katikati and local employment opportunities Continue to voice need for the Centre of Excellence to offer links for young people who have now left school but want a career in the Horticulture Sector. Support where required, any inter-government response that may be required to achieve this goal.
