Cultivating Latino Philanthropy NALCAB Annual Conference Los Angeles, CA Nadia Diaz Funn Annie E. Casey Foundation September 24, 2009

Annie E. Casey Foundation Mission: To improve outcomes for vulnerable kids and families. Southwest and Native Initiative began in foster new philanthropic investment - build capacity - fill the data gaps

Objective for the Day Description: A roundtable discussion designed to explore the state of philanthropy for Latinos, and among Latinos, in various sectors. Panelists will discuss existing initiatives and provide their expert view on how to best cultivate the culture and practice of philanthropy in Latino communities.

AECF Southwest Border Initiative 7 year placed-based initiative focused on Family Economic Success Lead with ideas & relationships, not money 3 core goals – Build the case – Grow capacity for sustainability – Garner new philanthropic and supporting partners

Building the Case At first engagement, very little data about border families existed To date – Over 25 publications – Legislative briefs – Research reports – Pocket guides – Scholarly articles in journals, presented at national and international conferences – Congressional testimonies Data for and by the community

Grow Capacity- investing in human capital Connect to successful national asset building models Connect practitioners—Border region can be isolating Support networks and relationship building fostering Learning communities Provide seed dollars to spark local initiatives

Garner new philanthropic dollars to the region Funder collaboratives: programmatic, ethnically, regionally Local funding Non-traditional government partners

When approaching a potential funder Four key components we are looking for? THINK COMPREHENSIVE -What partnerships are in place and what is each partners’ role? -Where is the advocacy piece? -What is your evaluation mechanism? -Potential co-investors? INCLUDING IN-KIND

Your program officers are your best advocates Potential reprogramming Facilitate introductions to other philanthropists Invite to local meetings w/banks, credit unions, other partners If a traditional grant is not possible, give them an option 2 or option 3 – Travel to conferences for staff development – Meeting support – printing

We are at the turning point (we believe) Endowments are structured to weather these types of downturns in the long run Philanthropic giving will recover but will be forever changed Position yourselves so that when things turn around you are the “go-to” organization on many levels

Thank you Nadia Diaz Funn Southwest Border and Native American Initiative Annie E. Casey Foundation
