Mechanical Engineering Proposal Seminar Project title Design of fretting corrosion testing set-up for hip joint implants Student - Ivon Tshinkobo Project supervisor – Dr Reza Oskouei x?pageid=2133
Content Introduction Project vision and goal Proposal design Project detailed Conclusion
Introduction Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints and surrounding tissues to cause pain, stiffness and inflammation. The most common is osteoarthritis where the cartilage breaks down and the bones rub together. The joint then loses its shape and alignment. Materials that are used in hip joint implant including Titanium alloy, Stainless steel, Co -Cr There are failure issues reported by clinical side are corrosion products. Metal Ions as a result of fretting wear Patients have corrosive product around the joint and Ion in the blood
Project vision and Goals Design of fretting corrosion testing set-up for hip joint Implants Head neck taper Investigating corrosion Testing of head-neck interface of a modular hip implant under physiological conditions Understanding fretting- induced failures in the patient Set should include corrosion environment Using Ringer’s solutions
Proposal design We are planning to design a set up specimen Specimen of head Specimen of neck
Figure 1 Figure one shows how the Testing can be conducted Set up specimen Haber Luggin Fretting pad Specimen Load Corrosion
Project Detailed Time frame Find actuators, load cell, return spring, measuring cell Haber-luggin capillary Piezo-actuator Laser nano sensor Specimen to represent head neck Writing up Modification of design if necessary
Conclusion The aim of this project is to design and manufacture of a fretting corrosion set-up for hip Implant Investigating failure in the hip implant Result of Ions in the blood and find solutions Patient have corrosion product around the joint Design modification if necessary
