World War II By Orlaith And Shay

What was World War II World War II was a war between the world. It was fought between the Axis Powers and the Allies. Axis Powers= Germany, Italy and Japan. Allies= Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America.

The Holocaust In 1945 Allied troops freed prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. In these camps, millions of Jews and other prisoners had been killed or had died from hunger, disease and cruelty.

Adolf Hitler Adolf Hitler ( ) was ‘Der Fuhrer’ (German for the Leader) of Nazi Germany.

How many people died? 60 million people died, about 40 million were civilians.

Anne Frank Anne Frank wrote a diary during the war. She wrote it in 1942.

German Bombers German bombers fly to attack Britain. These planes are two-engined Heinkel III’S photographed during the Battle of Britain.

The Emergency During World War II, Ireland went through a phase known as ‘The Emergency’ The Emergency contained censorship, food rationing and fuel shortages. Ireland was neutral during World War II alongside Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal.

Censorship Censorship was introduced from the start of The Emergency. Censorship meant people could not comment about the war or takes sides in newspapers, books or films. As a result, Irish people were often unaware of what was going on in Europe.

Rationing Food had to be rationed during the war. There were shortages of imported foods such as sugar, tea and flour. Fruits such as bananas and oranges were not available. Meat, clothes and chocolate were rationed. In 1942 bread was also rationed.

Gas Masks Gas masks were distributed to the people to protect them from poisonous gases. Gas masks worked by allowing clean air to be taken in. They also filtered out the poisoned air

Transport During the emergency there was shortage of fuel. Trains used timber and straw as fuel; instead of coal. Coal was very scarce. Gas and electricity were rationed as well.

War is over. When World War II ended in May 1945, Irish people were glad that they had stayed neutral throughout the war. People were horrified when they learned of the atrocities the occurred during the war.
