Complete one of the following assignments. Your written response will be evaluated based on the overall insight and quality of the essay you produce. Keep in mind that this assignment is not required though all are invited to participate in this assignment that is designed to extend your knowledge and understanding of the authors we are studying. (100 points) Due Date: on or before Thursday, November 6 th on Turnitin.com Note: Any essay submitted past the deadline will not be accepted, so do not wait until the last moment to upload or to set up a turnitin account. SUPPORTING A CLAIM Choose two essays that offer opposing viewpoints on “the possibilities and limits of forgiveness” and examine the evidence each person uses to support his/her claim. In your essay be sure to address each author’s claim and how each supports that claim. To what extent is their method(s) of persuasion similar to and different from each other? Which argument is stronger? How? Why? This essay should be at least two pages double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point. Be sure to cite your references within the paper. NEW HISTORICIST ESSAY To enhance your understanding of J.D. Salinger, the man and his career, further research Salinger’s life through an examination of at least two reputable sources (You must find sources that extend beyond the ones covered in class). Then write a literary essay that addresses the extent to which the writer’s life experiences shaped his writing of The Catcher in the Rye. This essay should be at least two pages double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point. Be sure to cite your references within the paper AND to include a works cited page.

Directions: You have closely read each of the texts listed at the bottom of the page and you will now write a source-based argument on the topic below. Your Task: Using evidence from at least three of the texts, and the novel, write a well- developed argument regarding whether Holden Caulfield is suffering from a serious mental health disorder(s) or if he is just a typical teenager. Clearly establish your claim, distinguish your claim from alternate or opposing claims, and use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence from at least three of the texts listed below, and the novel, to develop your argument. Do not simply summarize each text. Texts: Text 1 – The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Text 2 – “Why Teenagers Act Crazy” by Richard Friedman Text 3 – “Anxiety Disorders” reviewed by D'Arcy Lyness PhD Text 4 – “The Teenage Brain” by PBS Text 5 – “Bipolar Disorder” from New York Department of Mental Health Text 6 – “The Adolescent Brain: Beyond Raging Hormones” from the Harvard Mental Health Text 7 – “What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?” from AnxietyBC.com
