“If the city prospers you too will prosper” A call to look again at the discipling mandate of Christian Education

Jeremiah 29:4-12 (NIV) 4 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 "Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."

8 Yes, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them," declares the LORD. 10 This is what the LORD says: "When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

1. Disciple to counter tribalism and assimilation 4 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 "Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.

2. Disciple a CITY & NATION worldview 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile.

What is worldview? It is the way you view the world. Your response to any situation is determined by your worldview. A worldview is the way we think about life. It tells us about how we raise our children, what we feel towards the poor, what our attitudes will be towards national issues.

Genesis 1:28 (NIV) 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.“ Genesis 1:28 (NKJV) 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

3. Disciple a biblical attitude towards cities and nations 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."

4. Disciple with a long term view 8 Yes, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you.

Jeremiah 28:2 2 "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of the LORD's house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon.

5. Disciple ‘prisoners of hope’ 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Zechariah 9:12 (NIV) 12 Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

Romans 5:3-5 (NIV) 3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

1. Your learner rejects laager Christianity and dualism 2. Your learner understands each sector of society, how they fit together and how the Lordship of God is expressed through it. 3. Your learner has a biblical attitude and theology of cities and nations 4. Your learner has a long term generational view.5. Your learner is a ‘prisoners of hope’

If the city prospers you too will prosper
