1 2 3 6 What are equivalent fractions? Equivalent fractions are fractions with the same value. Sometimes it is very difficult to find equivalent fractions because the digits used in the fractions are completely different. Can you see how all the digits are different? 1 2 3 is the same as 6

Shapes can be used to show two or more fractions are equivalent. 1 3 How can we show; is equivalent to ? 2 6 1 3 2 6 What do you notice? Although the digits are different the amount of shaded area is the same for both fractions.

Identify the fractions that are equivalent. 6 1 3 8 2 4 1 2 1 3 6 2

Identify the fractions that are equivalent. 4 6 1 1 6 12 3 2 3 4 1 8 5 10 2 20 70 3 7 3 100 5 10 4

Fractions of shape Steps to success 1) Look carefully at the shaded shapes 2) Dismiss the shaded shapes that are not equivalent 3) Record the fractions that are equivalent Fractions of shape Steps to success Step 1) Look carefully at the shaded shapes Step 2) Dismiss any shapes that you think are not equivalent.
