Preparation 1 Write classroom management issues into your plan 2Get all resources ready the day before and put them out on the desk. 3Have the class register ready to be taken. 4 Put work books on the front desk.
Beginning of lesson 1.Be at door to greet the class and control corridor. 2.Greet the class, sit them down and take the register 3.Explain and visually show the lesson objectives 4.Warm the class up with a starter activity and make all pupils contribute.
Transitions 1.Try and make these smooth and set deadlines for movement. 2.Be in a position where the whole picture can be viewed 3.A good transition is when the pupils don’t notice them
Pupil/teacher relationship 1.Work on this right from the start by showing a genuine interest and enthusiasm for all your pupils. 3.Speak to people as you would expect them to speak to you. 4.Give regular oral and written feedback. 5.Talk with pupils while they are on task to build up the relationship 6.Remember respect is earned and not given away by position.
Expectations 1.These should be set right from the start. 2.Keep revisiting expectations in lessons. 3.Make sure they are in line with that of your department, 4.Be seen to be fair with all your pupils when implementing your ground rules.
Disruptive behaviour 1.Try and nip this in the bud and challenge bad behaviour. 2.Keep a series of measures up your sleeve to counteract bad behaviour. 3.Be like a fox and don’t try and hang a pupil for a minor offensive. 4.However don’t try and be Lord Shaftsbury - “ the pupil’s friend”. 5.Be confident at taking situations on. 6.Try and balance rewards and sanctions.
On Task 1.Get pupils on task quickly by setting deadlines 2.Explain tasks clearly and concisely when you have full attention. 3.Use the time when the pupils are on task to monitor progress. offer praise and plan ahead for next lesson e.g. resources. 4.Watch your body language in relationship to the whole class-. Don’t get sucked in to small groups.
End of lesson 1.Give plenty of time for this. 2. Review the lesson in the plenary. 3. Use the pupils to gather things in and give them out for next lesson. 4. Dismiss the class on a positive note and in an orderly fashion. 5.Take your position at the door to dismiss class and greet new one.
Evaluation and future planning 1.As soon as possible evaluate your management performance. 2.Pick out more positive than negative. 3. Analyse disruptive behaviour and think of ways to counteract it. 4. Talk to other staff about how they would have dealt with it. 5. Observe staff dealing with the same pupils and learn new techniques. 6. Use evaluation to inform future planning.
Useful tips Remember it is part of your standards and something Ofsted will be looking for. Always feel you have something to learn. Bad or incompetent teachers feel they have nothing to learn ( normally males aged about 50). Learning by your mistakes don’t dwell on them.
