Warm Up 1.Make your name tent 2. Complete the “Facebook Page” Student Info sheet While working on the Facebook page, take turns using the ipad to find out what scientific event happened on your birthday. Write a 1 sentence summary about it on the back of your name tent

Random Picture Find… Find a person who has the same picture as you do Take 2 minutes to get to know them and be ready to introduce them to the class. In your introduction include their: – Name – Birthday – 2 minute talk: Talk to your partner about yourself for 1 WHOLE MINUTE! Then it’s their turn to talk about themselves for 1 WHOLE MINUTE! I’ll tell you when your time is up and don’t interrupt your partner when it’s their turn to talk

Picture Find 1. Four Units on the walls…. What are they? 2. Now go to the unit your picture belongs to 3. You should have a larger group now! INTRODUCE yourself!

SUCCESS in Science We are going places in Science! To do so we need to build… – Critical thinking – Lab skills – Literacy – Confidence (NEVER say/write IDK) How will we build them? – Labs – Experiments – Projects BUT… We can only do these things if we display MODEL BEHAVIOR

Class Expectations In order for society to function, we must have and follow the rules. Similarly for this class to function and for all students to succeed, I have expectations and you need to follow them

To Be Successful…  Expectations: Be PROMPT Be PREPARED Be POLITE Be PRODUCTIVE (respect yourself, each other, and me) What do these mean? Can you think of some more expectations?

Interactive Notebooks Notebooks Bring to EVERY CLASS You will TAPE IN handouts, notes, diagrams, etc. Your notebook is what you will use to study for our tests…so don’t lose it!

Biopoems On a piece of paper, you will write a poem using the format listed on the instruction sheet Write a rough draft, and TYPE or write NEATLY for your final draft This goes on the first page of your notebook

Anna Lee Curly Hair, Artistic, Shy, blue eyes Sister of Alison and David, Wife of Jeremy Someone who loves Marble Slab, making things, and USC football Who feels exhilarated when I’m on roller coasters, sad when Christmas is over, and excited when something is on sale Who needs Pinterest, books, and my husband Who fears cockroaches, the dark, and scary movies Who gives hugs to my friends, love to my family and care to my dog Who would like to see the Great Wall of China, all orphans with parents and my grandmother one more time Resident of the green house in South Charlotte Poole

Time to write…your BIOPOEM Follow the instructions Write a rough draft first Final draft should be rewritten NEATLY and pasted on the first page of your notebook If you have time, you can decorate it with 5 pictures or symbols that represent you

Biopoem- Share out Read yours to someone at your table Would anyone like to share their biopoem to the whole class?

“Doing Science” Need four reader volunteers… Antoine Tamara Marcos Avery

Antoine- I think scientists just try out different things until something works Tamara-I think there is a definite set of steps all scientists follow called the scientific method Marcos-I think scientists use different methods depending on their question Avery- I think scientists use different methods but they all involve doing experiments Which student do you most agree with? Explain!

Our First Science Demonstration! What does “predict” mean? What does “observe” mean? What does “explain” mean?

Dollar on Fire!!! Write the title and copy this chart on a piece of notebook paper

Dollar on Fire!!!  Write in your notebook under your chart Explain: 1.What do you think the mystery solution is made of? Why? 2.Why do you think the dollar lit on fire but did not burn?

2 Truths and a Lie Each person gets one note card Write your name at the top Write 2 things that are true about you Write 1 thing that isn’t true about you Turn it over and raise your hand when you’re finished

Hula Hoop Relay Question: How fast can we get a hula hoop around our circle?

Hula Hoop Relay What are we going to need to do to be successful? What skills will help us to get this hula hoop around FAST!? How will we need to interact with each other to be successful? What is this similar to?

Hula Hoop Relay Let’s do it! TrialTimeNotes 1 2 3

Hula Hoop Relay Let’s graph it!

Write Time! Exit Ticket Questions to ponder… 1. Did our performance improve? By how much? 2.Why do you think our times got faster each trial? 3.How did teamwork and communication help us? How else can it help us in science class? 4.How did practice help us? How else can it help us in science class? 5.Why do we need to practice skills?

Expectations for End of Class 1.Your table is completely clean of any lab supplies, trash, and “graffiti” 2.You have your homework written in your agenda or notebook 3. WAIT for me to dismiss you, NOT the bell 4. Push your chairs under
