Plan b Workshop Dave Packwood

Introductions What is your name What organisation are you from What is the turnover of your organisation How long have you worked in the VCS

Why do we need a Plan B Think of income and resources within your organisation as cheese Cheese makes you and your organisation happy

Why do we need a Plan B Cheese makes you happy But someone has moved the cheese Story of: Sniff Scurry Hem Haw Which of these do you think represents you and your organisation

Why do we need a Plan B Previously there was lots and lots of cheese

Why do we need a Plan B But someone has moved the cheese Because someone has moved the Cheese

Why do we need a Plan B What is your cheese, and where does it come from How has it moved?

Why do we need a Plan B The more important cheese is to you, the more you want to hang on to it Have more varieties of cheese – what percentage of your resources comes from just one source – rule of thirds Can you take what you do and deliver it somewhere else

Why do we need a Plan B The sooner you let go of the old cheese, the sooner you can find new cheese

Why do we need a Plan B What is new cheese for you Funding from trusts – small and large grants, don’t focus on getting what you want from just one grant Funding from local and national government Funding from companies – sponsorship Funding from individuals – donors, sponsors, legacies, young people Funding from other commissioned sources, health, juvenile justice Events Trading – selling services (make sure you have something to sell and that it is worth buying) Online funding – crowd funding, online giving

Why do we need a Plan B Can you share your cheese with others Get less of the cheese but more varieties of cheese through: Consortium working Partnerships Sub contracting Being spot purchased Through Personal budgets

Why do we need a Plan B It is safer to search in the maze than remain cheese less Can you work together to find new cheese and share the cheese you have

Why do we need a Plan B Move with the cheese – adapt and change Can you use less of the cheese you already have - New methods, new systems, new styles Different staffing models – volunteers, part time, sessional workers, apprenticeships, consultants, share staff with others Co – location – sharing premises and costs Joined up back office and admin, payroll, finance, bidding etc

Why do we need a Plan B Golden Rules Change happens – they keep moving the cheese Anticipate change – get ready for the cheese to move Monitor change – smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old Adapt to change quickly – The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can find new cheese

Why do we need a Plan B Golden Rules Change – move with the cheese Enjoy change – Savour the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again and again Because they keep moving the cheese

Why do we need a Plan B What other issues and questions emerge for you about developing your own Plan B
