Page # 3 Types of rowing, types of boats l Two types: Sweep rowing & sculling l Sweep rowing - one oar in both hands l Pittsford crew races at regattas: sweep oar events l 8+ “+” denotes coxswain l 4+ l Other boats, sometimes at larger regattas: l 4- No coxswain, “straight four” l 2- Pair – very difficult to row well.
Page # 4 Types of boats l Sculling - one oar in each hand, “X” with a boat implies a sculling boat l 1x single - l 2x double(not the same as a pair!) l 4x quad (not a four!)

Page # 7 Rowing indoors l Rowing ergometer – l Measures output – l Comparisons valid between machines anywhere in the world (and hence between rowers) l At Pittsford, done in the PIRC (Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center)
Page # 8 What is being measured with the ergometers? (it’s a simulation, not real life) Distance (meters) Split time (minutes per 500 meters). Split time is the lingua franca for ergometers! ~1:50 for varsity boys….to… ~2:30 for novice girls …. Average split time for the piece
Page # 9 Types of races: Head Race l Boats start in single file, one at a time. l Winning time is computed from elapsed time for each boat. l Hard to tell who is winning!! l Boats supposedly start in bow number order. l Know the bow number for boat you are interested in!! l Interaction between boats is part of the race.
Page # 10 Sprint race l Line them up, they all start at same time. l First one across finish line wins. l Spring races are sprints
Page # 11 Time trial l Run like a head race, sometimes 2 lanes. l Purpose is usually to seed boats for sprints. l Done at NY States due to large number of boats. l Interaction between boats is not desired!
Page # 12 Liftbridge (Fairport) Regatta l Head race. l Start line is different for novice and varsity (this is highly unusual). l Bike path is great! You can watch the whole race. l Star marks where docks, hospitality are. This is a good place to watch from. l Varsity race 3 miles, Novice about 2 miles.
Page # 13 How to read a race schedule? l Boats are labeled with the stroke’s name. l At 8:05, the 2 nd race starts. Pittsford will the 3 rd boat in this race. l The Pittsford Boat, with E. Doeblin at stroke, will have bow #7. l *** YOU WANT TO KNOW THE BOW NUMBER OF YOUR ATHLETE’s BOAT. *****
Page # 14 What’s a bow number? l A bow number is a plastic card that is on the bow. l It might also be on the back of the bow rower and the back of the coxswain (at larger regattas). l Boats should start in bow number order, but this does not always happen.
Page # 15 Where do I get the race info? l Before: go to regattacentral.com l Login, and add the regatta to your list of regattas. l On race day: l Schedule and lineups should be posted at the TRAILER and the Hospitality Trailer. l Schedule is often posted for all crews at some central location (like a boathouse, etc).
Page # 16 Where do I get the race info? l RegattaCentral.com – various tabs have different info. l Often this information is not posted until the last minute.
Page # 17 What is the overall schedule? l 6:30 am – someone is putting the trailer in position… l 7 am – Hospitality is setting up…. l 7:30 am – first rowers arrive, unloading starts. l 8 am – coach and cox meeting… l 8:20 novices start launching… l 8:45 – First novice race starts – l 2 pm? Last race launches l 3 pm? Last race finishes… l 4:30 pm – Trailers arrive back at boathouse, unload, rig boats. l 6 pm ? Kids head home.
Page # 18 Schedule l Launching – typically 30 minutes before race time. l Guess what? – some regattas have delays. l Safety first!– give the boats plenty of room – rigger bolt in your ear is painful.
Page # 19 What should I bring? l Kids to bring: l The clothes you will race in! l Extra clothing, l warm jackets/rain gear, l LABEL EVERYTHING, l rain boots, l water bottle, sunscreen l $20 for regatta t-shirt, l garbage bag to keep things dry l Parents bring: Book, chair, binoculars, camera, sunscreen, hat, rain gear, money for food/regatta t-shirt, bicycle? l Be prepared for a range of temperatures.
Page # 20 How do we get the day rolling? l Breakfast l Start hydrating on waking… l Good breakfast – no experiments on race day! l I dropped my child off, now what? l Relax, grab coffee somewhere l Hospitality tent – coffee, help set up, meet other parents l How do I know who won? l Race results typically posted at organizers tent l Who gets medals – l Depends on particular regatta, usually 1 st and 2 nd place finishers.
Page # 21 Hospitality Tent l Tent is a nice place to meet other parents: l Food is free for rowers (paid for by tuition) l Breakfast / lunch / snacks… l Parents are asked to make a donation l $2 to $5 (thank you!) l Donations ($300 / regatta) turn budget from red to black l Tents for other teams are for those particular teams l Want something to do ? Always looking for a hand early in am (setup) or late in pm (tear down, cleanup). It’s close to the action..

Page # 23 Watching and learning…. Watch from the side to compare body position… Looking for all body positions, oar positions, etc, to be in sync.
Page # 24 Watching and learning…. Looking along the length of the boat enables you to see the timing of oar blades You can see this from front or back of the boat
Page # 25 Watching and learning…. Go to You Tube, search: “Cornell lightweights bladework”. This is what coaches spend huge amounts of time trying to improve.
Page # 26 Technique: slow catch, missing water l Blade is not anchored in the water, rower pushes boat backwards! l This is a very important thing to get right, and hard to do correctly. Common novice error. l Strong rowers, without the correct catch, just succeed in pushing boat backwards. Not good if you want to go fast.
