Creating a Digital Book Trailer A presentation for ‘Writers Unleashed’ Festival 17/11/13 Sharon McGuinness
Who Am I O A Teacher Librarian with a passion for writing and reading O My first picture book ‘Coming Home’ 2012 O My first ebook ‘Try!’ 2012 O Use book trailer tools in my primary classes to create their own O Not an expert!
A Trailer’s Purpose O To promote your new book O Acts like a hook O To encourage readers: a great teaching tool O Examples: O trailers.html trailers.html
What To Use O Windows Movie Maker OR O Mac iMovie O Photopeach O PowerPoint slides
Key ‘How To’ points O Must grab the viewer’s attention in the first frame O Keep text to a minimum O Usually text on one slide, image on the next
The Ending O Keep your reader guessing – don’t reveal how the story ends O Tell readers where to obtain the book – bookshop, online site, libraries etc O Finish with the cover of the book and publishing details.
Adding Images O Copyright! O You must have permission to use images – don’t forget to ask your illustrator’s permission! They will also have access to high resolution images which are the best to use. O If you intend using any other images, ensure they are downloaded from a copyright free site or purchase your own
Adding Images O You can filter google images to obtain access to shared images by using an advanced search. O You can also locate images from flickr O O or buy your own from O O
Adding Music O Adding music adds another layer to your trailer. O Once again, you can use copyright free music for free O O Or purchase your own (I paid $30 for mine) O

Giving Your Trailer That Extra ‘Flash’! O If you know someone who has experience using flash animation, they could apply it to a couple of your illustrations to give your trailer something extra. O This is a skill, so you will need to budget for an additional cost.
Nearly There….. O Just like your book, a trailer will undergo a series of drafts. O Don’t rush it! O Get feedback from ‘critical friends’ O Only when you are fully satisfied….. O Consider if you want to allow comments etc, then: O Upload it to youtube
Finally…. O Promote your trailer via social media – twitter, facebook, tumblr, your website/blog O Don’t forget publisher and illustrator websites O Alert bookshops and libraries close to the day of launching your book.
