Diesel Equipment Technology

The student will be able to identify service brake control components and match them with the proper definition to an accuracy of 80% Brake application valve (foot valve)- A foot-operated valve that supplies air pressure to various air brake system components during a brake application. Single Check Valve- A valve with one inlet and one outlet that allows air to flow through it only in one direction.

Double Check Valve- A check valve that has two inlets and one outlet. Quick Release Valve- A valve that releases air pressure quickly when the brake application valve is released. Service Brake Relay Valve- This valve receives a control pressure signal from the brake application valve, it opens and supplies air pressure to the service brake chambers Limiting Valve- The valve serves to limit brake applications in inclimate weather on the steering axle. Not legal for service brakes.

Limiting Quick Release Valve- The valve serves to limit brake applications in inclimate weather on the steering axle. Also acts as a quick release valve. Pressure Protection Valve- Pressure control valve which can be referred to as a non-exhausting sequence valve. Pressure Reducing Valve- Used to reduce air pressure below that of supply pressure. Trailer Control Valve- A driver-operated valve that provides a modulated application of the trailer service brakes.

Tractor Protection Valve- Protects the tractor air supply if the air supply pressure to the trailer is severely reduced. Relay Valve- When this valve receives a control pressure signal, it opens and supplies supply air pressure Inversion Valve- This is an air operated control valve. It is normally in the open position and is closed by the application of air pressure.

Cut-out Pressure- The pressure at witch the compressor enters the un-loaded cycle. Approximately 130 PSI Cut-in Pressure- The pressure at which the compressor enters the loaded cycle. 25 PSI below the cur-out pressure. Low Pressure Switch- An air activated switch that signals low air reservoir pressure Low Pressure Warning Device- System that provides a sound and light warning to the operator of the vehicle that it is unsafe to drive

Tractor Parking Valve- This valve allows the driver to apply the tractor parking brakes while charging the trailer air brake system. Trailer Supply Valve (Charge)- A driver operated valve that applies air to the trailer air tanks and releases the trailer parking brakes. Brake Light Switch- When activated it warns those behind you, the vehicle is slowing down.

Parking Brake Chambers- Chambers that are used to apply and release the parking brakes. Service Brake Chambers- Receives modulated air pressure and converts it into mechanical force.
