Moving & reversing vehicles One of the most dangerous areas for drivers and other employees of a transport company is the marshalling or yard area A driver was crushed when a lorry rolled back into a sloping loading bay. The handbrake was off! A transport manager was crushed against the cab of another vehicle when a lorry reversed A warehouse worker was crushed when directing a reversing lorry A driver was crushed between his and another vehicle after it ran away while the trailer was being coupled All information courtesy of the HSE Copyright Les Kelly 2009 CTDHC Health & Safety Guidance Your truck will not bend, to miss the pedestrian LOOK! THINK! ASSESS! Then reverse

Aims and objectives of safe loading Check the GVW on the company weighbridge before setting out from the depot If a weighbridge is not available at the depot, drive directly to a public one. You can legally do this as long as you can prove that you are going to the weighbridge without any deviation of route. However tippers cannot go from the loading point (building site) to the tip using this as an excuse YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED © Les Kelly 2010

If a load or a part of a load falls into water and causes pollution, and the waters are controlled, this is an offence under the water resources act This could attract a maximum fine of £ together with the cost of cleaning up the water This includes diesel from vehicles Copyright Les Kelly 2009 CTDHC Aims & objectives of safe loading & your legal requirements

Principles of Load Safety Copyright Les Kelly 2009 CTDHC Effect of movement on loads & the consequences of unsecured loads The load is moving in perpetual motion, as your vehicle moves the load follows The load also moves (presses) downwards causing ‘drag’ through weight issues on the axles, tyres and suspension As you turn the load moves sideways placing extra pressure on the suspension, axles and tyres

What does legislation cover? In short, everything to do with the workplace! Trips and falls Manual Handling Lorries in the workplace PPE Forklifts Lorry loaders Health & Safety Legislation © Les Kelly 2010
