Exploring Egan’s Skilled Helper: Further Applications Mentoring CPD & Supervision

Back to Basics The Egan model aims to help the speaker address 3 main questions: –'What is going on?' –'What do I want instead?' –'How might I get to what I want?' In the past we have looked at how to use this –Verbally –Visually –Kinaesthetically

Background Based on: –Carkuff’s theory of high level functioning helpers –Social influence theory –Bandura’s Learning theory Aim: to formulate a plan of action through building inner strength and utilising external resources. Using: active listening and empathy to generate mutual trust and respect

Exercise One Work in pairs: –Allow your mentee to tell their story –Identify blind spots and challenge –Focus on moving forward positively –30mins – 15 minutes each

Exercise Two Working in pairs: –Identify the preferred scenario –Set forward focused goals and reality test –Assess commitment to moving forward –30 minutes 15 minutes each

Exercise three Working in pairs –Identify possible actions –Focus on appropriate strategies –Make a plan of how to move forward –30 minutes - 15 minutes each
