SHC 22 Introduction to personal development © Laser Learning Limited under licence to Pearson Education Limited Printing and photocopying permitted. What are stereotypes? A stereotype is a preconceived idea of what a thing or person is like based on what is known or believed. e.g. I’ve never had a curry that wasn’t spicy, therefore all curries must be spicy.

True or false? ●All travellers are dishonest. ●All single mothers are on benefits. ●All immigrants are in the country illegally. ●All fat people eat too much.

The truth Hopefully you recognise that all of the previous statements are false. People should not be categorised in this way and doing so is unfair and unhelpful. Each person is an individual and should be treated as such.

Are you … ●blonde? ●older than your supervisor? ●a male in a profession dominated by females? ●a Jehovah’s Witness? Consider how and why other people may stereotype you.

Human nature It is inevitable that people will try to put others into neat categories whether or not they are justified. As a practitioner, you need to be aware of this and work towards making sure that your own prejudices do not affect your work or relationships with others.

Activity Think about people that you work with or know and ask yourself the following questions: ●How would I describe them? ●Is this description based on fact or belief? ●Is the way I behave towards them affected by how I view them? ●How might I change my beliefs?
