“Living or Not?”

“What do we call a living thing?” A living thing is called an organism.

1. All living things are made of cells. Cheek Cell Elodea Plant Cells Onion Plant Cell A cell is the basic unit of structure and function within a living thing.

A living thing made of only one cell is called unicellular. Amoeba

A living thing made of many cells is called multi-cellular. Elodea Plant

2. All living things are made of similar chemicals. Water Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals

3. All living things use energy. Producers Consumers

Carbon – Oxygen Cycle

4. All living things grow and develop.

5. All living things respond to their surroundings. Stimulus – cause Response – effect or reaction to cause

6. All living things can reproduce.

Basic Needs Living things have basic needs. Energy Water Living space Homeostasis

Homeostasis is maintaining an even set of internal conditions within an organism despite changes in the surroundings.

Living things are classified as biotic. Non-living things are classified as abiotic.

How do you decide if something is living or non-living? ?
