September 18, 2012 Warm up: Complete your poem from Friday.

Pre-AP essay Prompts Read the passage carefully to determine the author's purpose. In a well-written essay, analyze how Ackerman uses rhetorical devices to achieve this purpose. Consider such elements as the appeals, metaphor, paradox, and syntax. Read the following poem carefully. Then, in a well-organized essay, analyze how the speaker uses imagery to reveal his complex attitude toward his father. Support your analysis with specific references to the poem.

AP Prompts In the excerpt below from a speech given in Detroit on November 10, 1963, Malcolm X responds to Dr. Martin Luther King's vision of a "peaceful, turn-the-other-cheek" revolution. Read the Malcolm X passage carefully. Then write an essay in which you analyze how Malcolm X uses rhetorical strategies to develop his perspective about nonviolent protest. The passage below is an excerpt from "The Necessary Enemy," an essay written by mid-twentieth century author Katherine Anne Porter. Read the passage carefully. Then write an essay in which you define Porter's attitude toward love and hate and analyze the rhetorical strategies she employs to illustrate her position.
