THE LUNG CHANNEL OF HAND-TAIYIN PART 1 Copy right: Colin Chan

General Information of the Lung (TCM) It is located in the chest, the highest among the internal organs, opening to the nose. Physiological characteristics of the lung (TCM) A “ Florid Canopy” 肺为华盖 A “ Delicate” organ 肺为娇脏 Copy right: Colin Chan

Physiological functions of the lung (TCM) Domination of Qi Domination of dispersing and depurative descending function Relationship of the lung to other organs (TCM) Co-related with the skin and hair 肺外合皮毛 Opening into the nose 肺开窍于鼻 Throat as a gateway of the lung Internally-Externally related to the Large Intestine Color indicated: white Copy right: Colin Chan

The Lung Channel of Hand-Taiyin Route There are 11 acupoints in the surface pathway of the lung channel. The inner pathway begins in the middle energizer and descends the spine in order to connect with the large intestine. The return pathway passes through the cardiac orifice of the stomach and traverses the diaphragm. The channel penetrates the lung, the organ which belongs to it. The pathway continue to ascends to the trachea and connects with the larynx and the pharynx, the channel leaves the chest cavity beneath the clavicle at point LU 1. The surface pathway of the lung channel passes over the outer aspect of the inner upper arm to the elbow and runs over the radial margin of the palmer aspect of the forearm and the thumb to the radial side of the thumbnail. 2 3 1 4 5 6 Copy right: Colin Chan

Route-Branch The branch emerges posterior to the wrist (styloid process) and runs along the dorsum of the hand to the radial aspect of the tip of the index finger where it connects to the Large Intestine channel. 7 Copy right: Colin Chan

Principal Syndrome Organ syndrome Lung Congestions, Dyspnea, cough, SOB, pain in the Quepen ST 12 area, fever with chills, spontaneous perspiration. Meridian syndrome Pain and cold along the anterior border of the medial aspect of the arm, pain and swelling of the throat. Excess in Qi: Burning sensation on the palm and pain in shoulder and back. Deficient in Qi: Pain and cold feeling in the shoulder and back. Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 1 Zhongfu 中府 Location : Upper lateral chest, acupoint is located in the 1st intercostals space, 6 cun from the anterior midline, 1 cun below LU 2 Yunmen Classification: Front-Mu point of the lung and Crossing point of the LU and SP channels Approach: oblique/horizontal insertion technique, 0.5-0.8 cun towards the lateral side of the chest, moxa Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 5 Chize 尺泽 Location : On the transverse crease of the elbow, acupoint is located on the radial depression of the tendon of m. biceps brachii when the elbow is slightly bent Classification: He-Sea point Approach: perpendicular insertion technique, 0.5-0.8 cun Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 6 Kongzui 孔最 Location : On the palmer side and radial aspect of the forearm acupoint is located on the line joining LU 5 Chize 尺泽 and LU 9 Taiyuan 太渊, 7 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist Classification: Xi-Cleft point Approach: perpendicular insertion technique, 0.5-1.0 cun Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 7 Lieque 列缺 Location : On the palmer side and radial aspect of the forearm acupoint is located superior to the styloid process of the radius, 1.5 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist between the brachioradialis and the abductor pollicis longus of the thumb Classification: Luo-Connecting point, one of the 8 confluent point (linking with the Conception Vessel 通任脉) Approach: oblique insertion (towards elbow) technique, 0.2-0.3 cun 列为分, 缺为破. Copy right: Colin Chan

The Collateral route of LU channel LU 7 Lieque 列缺 Lie Que: Is assigned as the Luo-Connecting point Its rouite as a collateral starts parallel between the tendons of M. bronchoradialis and m. abductor polliciis longus and runs parallel with the LU channel into the hand and spreads over the dorsal aspect to link with…. The Large Intestine channel (according to the inter-external related theory) and (continuation flow of Qi in sequence as according to the continuation flow of the channel system). (The LI channel runs across the dorsal region of the Hand) Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 8 Jingqu 经渠 Location : On the palmer side and radial aspect of the forearm, acupoint is located in the depression between the styloid process of the radius and the radial artery,1.0 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist Classification: Jing-River point Approach: Perpendicular insertion technique, 0.2-0.3 cun, do not moxa Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 9 Taiyuan 太渊 Location : On the radial aspect of the transverse crease of the wrist acupoint is located in the depression, on the lateral (ulnar) side of the radial artery Classification: Yuan-Source/Shu-Stream point and one of the 8 Influential point (Vessel Convergence 脉会) Approach: Perpendicular insertion technique, 0.2-0.3 cun 太为大, 渊为深潭. Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 10 Yuji 鱼际 Location : On the palm, acupoint is located on the midpoint of the 1st metarcarpal bone, at the junction of the red and white skin Classification: Ying-Spring point Approach: perpendicular insertion technique, 0.5-1.0 cun Copy right: Colin Chan

Commonly used acupoint LU 11 Shaoshang 少商 Location : On the radial aspect of the thumb, 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail Classification: Jing-Well point Approach: oblique (superficial) insertion technique, 0.1 cun upwards or prick to bleed Copy right: Colin Chan
