Social Contribution Dr. Seuss was an amazing writer. He brought parents and children closer together by making it fun and easy to read. His books taught lessons like The Lorax and The Sneetches. The Lorax teaches about how big an impact people have on the environment. The Sneetches teach that it’s okay to be different and making fun of people gets you nowhere. Hr didn’t try to relate to the children, he just did. I think it was because he was because he was always a kid at heart. He also helped children like to read and help them learn to read because his books were so interesting.

Childhood Dr. Seuss lived three blocks from the public library and six blocks from the zoo. In fact, his father ran the zoo, which sounds a lot like his book, “If I Ran the Zoo.” he had a three legged bulldog named Rex. He loved to play with his friends in the neighborhood. He was German, and during that time the United States was having a war in Europe. He got beat up at school, too. Plus, the family business was a brewery and the people of Springfield weren’t fond of people that drank beer. His dad always encouraged Ted to get into sports, but Ted hated sports. The only person that liked his doodles was his mom. He actually won first prize at the Springfield Union, the local newspaper, for a funny cartoon.

Adolescence As you probably already know, Dr. Seuss loved to draw/doodle. In high school he decided to try an art class. He started to draw on of his cartoons, and the teacher saw it. The teacher told him that he would never be successful in art and he quit the class. His doodles were always against he rules, somehow. He often skipped school to go to the movies or something like that because he disliked school very much. In 1917, the U.S. declared war on Germany and even though he was German, he helped the U.S. by selling liberty bonds as a Boy Scout. He sold so many that he was going to get an award, but there were too few medals and Ted was the last one on stage, so he didn’t get a medal. In high school, he was voted class wit and class artist. He went to Dartmouth College in northern New Hampshire and also went to Oxford University in England.

Adulthood At Oxford, he met his wife, Helen Palmer. They were married in she also wrote children's books. He dropped out of Oxford without a degree. He supported them through The Great Depression by drawing advertisements for General Electronic, NBC, Standard Oil, and many other companies. Then, World War II began and he wrote political cartoons. after the war, he moved to La Jolla, California, with is wife, of course! His books never won any medals, however, his books were always runner-ups. On October 23,1967, Helen Palmer Geisel committed suicide because she was suffering from illnesses including cancer. He married again, to Audrey Stone Dimond on June 21, He was a great man that died on September24, He has a memorial in his birth town of Springfield Massachusetts.

Fun Facts!!!!! (slide of choice) Did you know…… There is an entire room in The Baker Library at Dartmouth College dedicated to Dr. Seuss called the Theodore Seuss Geisel room. He joined the Army during World War II He died of jaw cancer “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” was his last book published in 1990, the year before his death.
