Development of an Unborn Baby Immanuel Lutheran 5 th & 6 th Grades April-May 2007

Days 1-9 Sperm joins with the ovum (egg). Forming one cell smaller than a grain of salt. The new life has inherited 23 chromosomes from each parent equal to 46 chromosomes. The fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus. There the lining has been prepared for implantation.

Days5-9 During this time the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterus. Then begins to draw nourishment.

Week Two The fertilized egg travels to the womb. If the fertilized egg gets stuck on the way to the womb the baby will have to be aborted otherwise the mom and the baby will die. The backbone and muscles start to form ( %5FDevelopment/)

Week 4 When a embryo is developing at week four the heart begins to beat and the backbone and muscles are forming. The babies arms, legs, eyes, and ears begin to appear.

WEEKS 5-6 Five fingers can be seen on the hand Has darkened pigments for eyes Brain waves can be detected Muscles and vital organs are formed

Week 7 The embryo begins to move. The mouth starts to form. The embryo is about 7-9 mm long. The baby goes through three sets of kidneys.

Week 8 The embryo is now called a fetus. Everything is present that will be found in a fully developed adult. It keeps growing and develops muscles. Its heart has been beating for more than a month.

Weeks 9-11 Week 9- Fingerprints are already evident in the skin The Zygote will curve its fingers around An object placed in the palm of its hand. Week 10-The uterus has now doubled in size. The fetus can squint, swallow and wrinkle its forehead. Week 11-At this time, the fetus is about 2 in. long. The face has assumed a baby’s profile and movements are becoming more coordinated.

Weeks The fetus sleeps, awakens, and exercises its muscles energetically turning its head, opening and closing its mouth, and curling its toes. The palm, when is stroked, it will make a tight fist The fetus breathes amniotic fluid to help its respiratory system. You can tell if it is a boy or girl.

Month 4 At the end of month 4 the fetus is 8-10 in.,and weighs a half lb. or more. The umbilical cord transports 300 quarts of fluids per day and completes a round-trip of fluids every 30 seconds.

The 5 th Month Organs mature Sleeps and is awake on a regular pattern Arm, legs, and mouth can be seen moving on ultrasounds 8-12 inches long, ½ to 1 pound in weight Can be able to tell if baby is boy or girl on ultrasound

The 6th Month The baby is over a foot long and weighs close to 2 pounds. At this time the baby’s eyelids open and close. Baby moves and is more active Is able to suck thumbs

The Sixth Month  The fetus in this stage is able to sweat and produce oils.  The skin at this stage still has vulnerable skin, but could still live if birthed.

Month 7 The baby now uses four senses: vision, hearing, taste and touch. He can recognize his mother’s voice.

Month 8 The skin begins to thicken, with a layer of fat stored underneath for insulation and nourishment. The baby absorbs a gallon of amniotic fluid per day. The fluid is completely replaced every three hours.

Month 9 Toward the end of this month, the baby is ready for birth. Most babies are born between 266 and 294 days. The infant normally weighs 6 to 9 pounds. He is fully capable of life outside of the womb.
