Do you remember one of the most remarkable photographs ever taken? You probably received it via ... The tiny hand of a fetus reaches out from a mother's womb to clasp a surgeon's healing finger. You will now find out the story of the baby Samuel Alexander Armas. The photograph was taken during a pioneering surgical procedure performed on August 19, 1999, to fix the spina bifida lesion of a 21-week-old fetus in the womb. The operation was performed by a surgical team at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. The team, Dr. Joseph Bruner and Dr. Noel Tulipan, had been developing a technique for correcting certain fetal problems in mid-pregnancy.

Their procedure involved temporarily opening the uterus, draining the amniotic fluid, partially extracting and performing surgery on the tiny fetus, and then restoring the fetus to the uterus back inside the mother. Alex and Julie Armas first discovered that their baby had spina bifida during an ultrasound at 14 weeks after conception mark. The Armas family came across the Vanderbilt procedure while researching their options online. This was the surgical team's 54th operation on a fetus still in the uterus. During the operation, Dr. Joseph Bruner successfully alleviated the effects of the opening in Samuel's spine caused by the spina bifida.

At the end of the surgery, Dr. Bruner had placed the still incised uterus on Julie's tummy, preparing to place it back inside. Michael Clancy, the photographer, remembers seeing, out of the corner of his eye, the uterus begin shaking, and suddenly a tiny arm shot through the opening. As Dr. Bruner began to try to place the arm back inside, Samuel's hand grabbed Dr. Bruner's finger. The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity. The editors titled the picture, "Hand of Hope." The text explaining the picture begins, "The tiny hand of 21-week-old fetus Samuel Alexander Armas emerges from the mother's uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner as if thanking the doctor for the gift of life.”

Little Samuel's mother said they "wept for days" when they saw the picture. She said, "The photo reminds us my pregnancy isn't about disability or an illness, it's about a little person" "The Hand" of the fetus. You can see the actual picture, and it is awesome...incredible. amuel was born on 02/12/1999; a happy, healthy and apparently normal baby. The operation was a complete success.
