When a verb or impersonal expression that expresses emotion appears in the main clause of a complex sentence, the verb in the subordinate clause is in the subjunctive. Temo que la clase sea difícil. I’m afraid that the class might be hard. ↑ ↑ main clause subordínate clause
If there is no change of subject in the sentence, use the infinitive. Temo tomar la clase. I’m afraid to take the class. Nos alegramos de reciclar las latas y botellas. We’re happy to recycle cans and bottles.
The verbs gustar, molestar and sorprender are used with indirect object pronouns (me, te, le, nos, os, les). Me gusta que no contamines el medio ambiente. I like that you don’t pollute the environment. Les sorprende que reciclemos los envases de plástico. It surprises them that we recycle plastic containers.
Ojalá (que) I hope (that), I wish (that) is of Arabic origin. (Alá = God) It originally meant May God grant… Ojalá que protejamos el planeta. I hope that we protect the planet.
