Objectives To learn how to use qui and que

What are they called?  They are both relative pronouns: they replace a noun that has been mentioned before AND work as connectives too.  This is the pen which I love writing with.  We are two friends who are travelling together.

When do we use qui?  Qui is the subject of the second sentence.  The football player who is the best is the one who scores!  The song that makes me cry has just been played on the radio.

When do we use que?  Que is the object of the second sentence.  Le livre que je lis est formidable.  The book that I am reading is great.  The apple that I ate was delicious.

Ce qui, ce que…  They work on the same pattern, but tend to be at the beginning of a sentence.  What I want is silence!  What is funny is that you like Cliff Richard!
