Agenda  Welcome  User centred design and design principles exercise (unit 12).  Looking towards the TMA05.  What you need to pass.  Writing Assignments.

Objectives  You will have used an example to discuss user centred design and design principles  You will be sure what is required to pass the course.  You will feel comfortable with the format of TMA05  You will feel more confident about the prospect of TMA05 and how to begin to tackle the essay question.

Writing Assignments  Prepare your environment  Plan your time – set a timetable  Understand the Question  Gather all your resources  Research  Plan  Review the question:plan –Are you doing what you have been asked to do?  Write a draft – review it  Write the Final version. (spell check!)  Hand it in!  Review it when it is marked

Understand the Question  Underline the main words.  Make sure you understand them.  What is the subject?  Is there a word limit?  Write it out in your own words – compare the 2  Start jotting down ideas as they spark.

Question on a National Identity Card System  What is the word length? Margin of error? What is included and omitted in this count?  Is it a structured or open question?  Are there marks for structure, style and presentation how many?  What are the learning outcomes?  Who is the audience  What resources will you need? (remember you will need to reference!)

Before You Start Plan your Activity Gather all your Resources Prepare your Environment Negotiate your Time. Plan a Reward Nourish – Relieve - Comfort Start

Planning  It is probably the single most important task!  Clears and organises thoughts  Focus on what is relevant  It provides a logical, coherent framework for your answer  Gives direction – a map  Can be textural/diagrammatic personal to you  Must be legible and editable

Writing a First Draft  Follow you plan!  Write a draft.  One sentence per point – if 2 pts –they must be related.  Keep sentences short and concise  Avoid redundancy – especially important when you have a word count!!!  Use proper sentences – verb and object, correct tense –don't change.  Ensure you writing flows – read it back  Review your draft – does it answer the question

Reducing Redundancy  Short sentences, cut out the little words such as and, is, it, the.  Do you need the flowery descriptions – hard hitting accurate measurable facts! Descriptions are often subjective not objective.  Don’t repeat –say it once!  If you have a list, create bullet points saves all the and’s, the’s and introductory words.

Reduce the word count! Abbreviate phrases to one word The great majority  the majority Along the lines of  like It being the case that  because/since At some future point  later Due to the fact that  because In the first instance  first Short sentences don’t need and! Don’t say it more than once
