RAMSES & ARCON Radiation Monitoring for the Environment and Safety Basics and Overview M. Widorski, DGS/RP EDMS

RAMSES replaces ARCON LHC CNGS CTF3 (2008/2009) LINAC4 (201?) PS and SPS as LHC injectors (partially ~2011) ARCON remains at: Experimental areas and non-LHC relevant installations

Different concept for RAMSES Industry standard based technology Decentralised system Local autonomous detectors (DA) Using Technical Network infrastructure Uses PCVue SCADA supervisory system

Interfaces Interlocks – SIL 2 hardware interlock LASER connection – Alarms transmitted to LASER DIP: Data Interchange Protocol – Access to RAMSES (some) real time data Logging DB / Measurement DB – Access to RAMSES (some) historical data

ARCON Hardware

ARCON Supervision architecture

ARCON – RAMSES – BRIDGE

RAMSES2 Light Securing the LHC injector chain Installation of ~50 measuring channels at the PS and SPS to partially replace ARCON All relevant installations for LHC operation now independent of ARCON Parallel operation to ARCON in 2011 Installation finished during short shutdown; acceptance tests ongoing Alarm transmission to CCC to be finalised

ARCON/RAMSES consoles CCC (PS) Dedicated ARCON Terminal, will be replaced by RAMSES console Alarm repeater panel ARCON connection status

Alarm repeater (PS) Acknowledge button Test button Alarm LED Operational status 1.Alarm is triggered: Sound + LED 2.Acknowledgement: If alarm still present, LED remains, sound is stopped but repeated after 5 min 3.LED disappears when alarms is acknowledged and off.

ARCON connection panel (PS) 1.If connection to ARCON is lost: Sound + LED 2.Acknowledgement 3.Upper panel shows which ARCON has been lost 4.LED disappears when connection is re-established

ARCON Interlocks Signal from ARCON output (same as displays or repeater) North Area, SM18, ISOLDE ARCON interlock = 56 monitors Redundant measure Fail safe rate meter creates interlock Independent of ARCON operation Linac 2 RATEMETER interlock = 1 monitor Interlock created by LASER system ECA4/CNGS, TI2, TI8, ECA5 LASER interlock = 10 monitors

System failures Typical failures: Network interruption, power failures Alarm remains on although alarm conditions are off Monitors stops working (BF alarm) Monitors show abnormal high values Software crashes (no alarms created, no alarms transmitted, no measurements stored or transmitted, “stable values”, no communication possible) Always contact DGS/RP (piquet or technician) in case of failures or doubts. Think failsafe !

Actions summary ARCON: A Level - RAMSES: “Alarm” (red) 1. Ascertain the cause of the alarm. 2.Take action to reduce the radiation levels. 3.If the radiation level cannot be reduced, contact DGS/RP. ARCON: B Level - RAMSES: “High Alarm” (red) 1. Stop the beam to the corresponding area. 2.Ascertain the cause of the alarm. 3.Take action to avoid further high radiation levels. 4.Note the alarm, its cause and actions taken in the logbook. 5.If the high radiation level persists, contact DGS/RP. Monitors or system fault 1. Identify the failure location and stop the beam to the corresponding area. 2.Contact DGS/RP, in order to put the system/monitor back into service. 3.The beam can be restarted once the fault has been eliminated or compensated.
