Introduction to Physical Science
Observation vs. Inference An observation is actually what we perceive using our senses - touch, smell, sound, sight – in chemistry, we never use taste.
Scientific Method Notes
 Allows researchers to detect cause and effect relationships  Researchers manipulate a variable and observe whether any changes occur in a second variable.

Intro Objective: 5 September 2012 Explain the steps of the scientific method. What is the difference between observations and inferences?
... Are reasonable conclusions derived from observations.  Inferences are based on your prior knowledge and past experiences.  Scientists make inferences.

Obscertainer Lab VOCABULARY

Observations: Things learned or perceived using the 5 senses Sight Hearing Touch Taste Smell

Inference: Judgements made based on observations. Inference Example

Direct Evidence: Knowledge gained through observations

Indirect Evidence: Knowledge gained through inferences

Confirmation: Making sure, checking using supportive evidence. To verify

Confirmation

Control: The normal condition in an experiment. – used for comparison purposes. The group that does not get the treatment.

Experimental Change Variable – Any change that affects the outcome in an experiment – used to compare. Manipulative – A change done on purpose. (Independent variable) Responding – A change that occurs in the outcome of an experiment. (Dependent variable)

Obscertainer: A fictional word made up of 2 real words – Observe – use the senses Ascertain – to make sure, learn with certainty, to determine.

Model: A mental picture or representation of something you cannot see.
