Basketball Notes Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith Each team consists of five players. A field goal is worth 2 points. A free throw is worth 1 point. A three point field goal is worth 3 points. A player with possession of the ball must dribble the basketball to be able to move along the court.

Basketball Terms Offense refers to the team with possession of the ball. Defense refers to the team defending their basket. Man to man: Defensive system where a player is responsible for guarding an opposing player. Zone defense: Defensive system where a player is responsible for defending a zone on the court.

Basketball Terms Jump ball: a ball thrown up into the air by a referee to start a game or resume play. Rebound: catching the basketball after a missed shot.

Basketball Violations Violation: breaking a rule of the game. Traveling: moving while in possession of the basketball with out dribbling. Double Dribble: using two hands at the same time to dribble, or stopping the dribble and then restarting to dribble. Back court: when an offensive team crosses the half court line into their defensive zone. Out of bounds: when the ball or a player leave the court of play.

Basketball Fouls Foul: making contact with an opposing player to gain an advantage. Hacking / Reaching: when a defensive player hits the arm or hand of an offensive player with the ball. Holding: a player holds an opponent with or without the ball. Blocking: when a defensive player gets to a position after an offensive player and contact occurs.

Basketball Fouls Charging: when a defensive player gets to a position before an offensive player and contact occurs. Shooting foul: a foul that occurs while the offensive player is shooting the basketball. Results in free throws.

Basketball Skills Dribbling 1. Triple Threat Position 2. Run with eyes up. 3. Use finger pads and snap wrist. 4. Waist high dribble. 5. Jump stop and pivot.

Basketball Skills Shooting 1. Triple Threat Position 2. Find seams (hand placement), Eyes on target (look at the rim). 3. Forearm straight up and down. 4. Use legs for power. 5. Snap wrist and follow through (Gooseneck pointed at basket).

Basketball Skills Bounce Pass 1. Triple Threat Position 2. Ball to chest, thumbs down. 3. Step and Pass. 4. Bounce at 60% of distance. 5. Pass reaches target (belly to waist height).
