Music is “Love’s Theme”, by Barry White

In America, 72 percent of men and 63 percent of women are overweight or obese By 2020, 83 percent of men and 72 percent of women will be overweight or obese. Source - American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, Nov. 16, 2011 Our society spends large sums of money to look thinner and trimmer, with or without actually losing weight With clothing, men like to appear to have larger chests, and relatively smaller waists This does not necessarily mean “weighs less”, but rather “is more fit, more in-shape, more powerful” This idea was the basic premise for John Molloy, “Dress for Success” For men, this has led to tapered-cut shirts and jackets, sometimes called “athletic cut” or “trim cut” In like manner, women go to some lengths to enhance their figures This applies to dress, casual, formal, leisure, sports wear, swim wear, outerwear, and underwear

Recent Example of Current Emphasis on Looking Thinner

In general, horizontal stripes in clothing make one appear shorter and heavier than actual. In general, vertical stripes in clothing give the appearance of adding height, and minimizing weight. Vertical, parallel stripes have been a clothing standard for years, and are still very much a part of contemporary wardrobes. Vertical stripes minimize normal, natural body contours and shapes. As such, they can resemble ‘prison clothing’.

Most dress coat, shirt, blouse and pants material is woven, with a smaller amount knitted For centuries, this weaving has been done at 90-degree angles – warp and weft With woven material, stripes are easily woven into the fabric, but the stripes could be, and sometimes are, printed on the fabric The average consumer has no idea if the stripes are woven in or printed on Likewise, people observing the wearers have no idea if the stripes are woven in or printed on

Clothing manufacturers are concerned with minimizing waste. This despite the fact that a dress shirt or blouse might retail for $50-$100, with suits much higher. Waste material is a small fraction of the total cost when compared to materials, labor, packaging, transportation, marketing, advertising, store overhead, salesperson commission, profit, etc.

Hering Illusion

Hering illusion – Previous Slide The Hering illusion is an optical illusion discovered by the German physiologist Ewald Hering in The two vertical red lines are both straight, but they look as if they were bowing outwards. The illusion tricks us into thinking we are moving forward. Since we aren't actually moving and the figure is static, we misperceive the straight lines as curved ones. Vertical pinstripes, not parallel, but slightly tapered to the waist for both shirts/blouses and pants The stripes themselves could be slightly wider at the shoulders (3mm), thinning at the waist (2mm) This would give men the appearance of larger chests and smaller waists. Same thing for women. This could lead to more waste when a shirt is printed and sewn, but this is of little importance on an item costing upward of $50 - $100.
