Sprockets The sprocket looks like a gear but differs in four important ways: l Sprockets have many engaging teeth; gears usually have only one or two. l The teeth of a gear touch and slip against each other; there is basically no slippage in a sprocket. l The shape of the teeth are different in gears and sprockets. Sprockets and gears l are not interchangeable. l Sprockets are usually thinner and lighter than gears. Recommendations l All sprockets must have >120º of chain wrap (180º is better) l Chains “stretch” as they wear, have a way to adjust tension
