Our Writing Process 1. Collecting Entries 2. Selecting a Seed Idea 3. Revising 4. Drafting 5. Editing 6. Publishing Each student has a button which they physically move through the stages.

Collecting Entries Entry Collection From Desiree’s Professional Writing Notebook Tacos Laser Tag About Ways to parper me for Christmas About the Mayor coming to our school When my baby cousin was born

Selecting a Seed Idea Have you ever had a Christmas before? Here is what I did to get me ready for Christmas? One time when I was getting ready for christmas I help my grandma put up her Christmas tree. Then I went outside and saw my friend and we started talking about what we wanted for Christmas, I told my friend that I make Christmas list for Christmas, Then I went and watched tv intill I fell a sleep. Excerpt from: About ways to parper me for Christmas

Revising ( Not Editing!) Zoom In Letter Writing We use two forms of revision:

Revising: Zoom In When you pull one sentence or idea from your selected entry and focus only on that topic. The idea is to have the students think deeper about a situation.

Zoom In Have you ever had a Christmas before? Here is what I did to get me ready for Christmas? One time when I was getting ready for christmas I help my grandma put up her Christmas tree. Then I went outside and saw my friend and we started talking about what we wanted for Christmas, I told my friend that I make Christmas list for Christmas, Then I went and watched tv intill I fell a sleep. zoom

Revising: Letter Writing When you write a letter to someone or thing that is involved in the entry. There is never any intention of the letters being seen by the “recipient”. This is used to have the students explore the idea further. Students sometimes ask questions. This form of revising brings out a lot of personal feelings (especially in memoir). They also get to explore a different point of view.

Letter Writing Dear Grandma I still remember about the time when we put up the Christmas tree on Christmas eve. I also remember about when we also went to the store to get some Christmas things to wrap them and put them under the Christmas tree. Grandma I want to know do you like when we put the Christmas tree together Because I sure did? I had alot of fun putting the Christmas tree up because I got to help. Did you have fun putting up the Christmas tree too? I loved hanging out with grandma. Your friend, Desiree

Drafting Once the students have written a couple of revision pieces they are able to start on the first draft. This draft is not a copy of any of the revision pieces or any entries. Students should be able to write a full draft without reading their notebook. The process is meant to develop their ideas, enhance the details of their writing and increase the volume.

Editing This is the stage of the writing process where the students edit their work. They check for spelling, grammar and mechanics. They also may add or delete sentences and/or words.

Publishing to Share After students have self edited their work. They publish their final piece. They use their neatest penmanship. The create and design a cover. Once all students have published a piece the class has a writing celebration, where students share their writing with the class.
