The Five Promises are those developmental resources — wrap-around supports — that young people need for success in life. America’s Promise is built around the framework of ensuring that all young people experience these Promises. Communities in all 50 states have registered as partners with America’s Promise to deliver these promises. They have tackled the key issues of the time through the five promises. They have expanded their services to meet the needs of the children. One way does not fit all!
According to statistics provided by the Crater Planning District, the median household income in 2009 for Prince George was $66,049. The closest to us was Surry at $53,320. Our unemployment rate is below 7 percent. Our Public School Division is lauded as being innovative and effective and a leader in our region.
Our Parks & Recreation Department is full- service and offers numerous programs. We had 2200 kids enrolled last year. We have active groups likes Boys and Girls Scouts that fill important needs to kids who may not play sports. We have numerous churches of every denomination who have active youth groups.
2010 numbers show we have 8,052 kids being raised in Prince George County. That is 22.5 percent of our population. The Public School Division estimates 6,349 students are estimated to be enrolled in pre- k through grade 12 for the school term. We also have approximately 113 kids who were home-schooled last year.
8.6 percent of our families live below the poverty level, which includes 11.6 percent of our children. Many of the children in these families live in single-parent households, or are dependent upon grandparents for support. The school year showed that 37.4 percent of our students were on free or reduced lunch plans, or 2,378 students.
The last report from DSS shows that children received $186, in public insurance benefits, which is the FAMIS program. juveniles were sent to Crater Youth Academy last year for a total of 1150 total days.
The brightest and best deserve to be part of education, athletic and art programs to advance their skills. Advance job learning programs and internships. Be part of improved community facilities. Open opportunities to be part of technology at its highest level, not just video games & cell phones.
PG’s Promise Youth Stakeholders Community Support Incubator of New Ideas
Becomes the identity for serving youth in Prince George County. Coordinates & collaborates with all youth programs to support and advance each mission. Still allows for total independence of all programs without interference. Collects data and records as to how the five promises are being met.
Will become a 501c3 for purposes of raising and distributing funds to youth stakeholders. Will be aggressive in pursuing grants and corporate gifts. Will sponsor events that magnify the mission of the youth stakeholders. Will tell the story of the success of Prince George’s kids & their stakeholders.
Programs Facilities Events Representative on state and national stages. Creative ways to give our kids a competitive advantage in a tough and challenging world.
Youth stakeholders meet again at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 10 to continue discussion after reviewing America’s Promise on their own. If there is support to move forward, then establish a committee to draw up a charter and by-laws and then set a date to elect officers and Board of Directors.
