Springfield Public Schools: Handwashing Training

This program follows guidelines set up by The Clean Hands Coalition Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control (BCDC) Massachusetts Department of Public Health

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Understand importance in handwashing for prevention of the spread of germs List when to wash your hands Follow correct procedure for handwashing

Protect yourself and others Foodborne illnesses such as salmonella and E Coli can live up to 2 hours on surfaces such as counters and doorknobs

Protect yourself and others Rotovirus can be transferred from a dry clean surface to a clean hand for up to as long as 20 minutes after contamination

The single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness to others is to clean our hands! Prevention

Nearly 22 million school days are lost annually due to the common cold, with diarrhea being the second common cause of missed work and school days (both of which are preventable with proper handwashing)

You should wash your hands;  When arriving at work  Any time you change tasks  Before handling food

You should wash your hands after:  using the bathroom  smoking  sneeezing  touching your hair or face  eating or drinking  changing a diaper  handling dirty dishes or utensils  touching raw meats, poultry and fish

Handwashing procedure Wet with warm running water

Handwashing procedure Lather with soap and scrub between fingers, on the backs of your hands, and under nails

Handwashing procedure Wash for 20 seconds, or as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday ”

Handwashing procedure Dry hands using a paper towel or electric hand dryer Use paper towels to turn off the tap

Hand sanitizers Remember: If soap and water are not available, use alcohol- based gel to clean hands.

Hand sanitizers  Apply product to the palm of one hand  Rub hands together  Rub the product over all surfaces of hands and fingers until hands are dry.

Soap and water vs hand sanitizers Soap and waterHand sanitizer Does not kill anything, but washes it away Kills all germs- the good, the bad and the harmless Soap does not need to be antibacterial for it to be effective Does not remove dirt

Gloves Need to be worn when in contact with body fluids Should be changed anytime you would need to wash your hands

Gloves  Proper handwashing using the technique above should follow immediately after removing gloves

Gloves  Should be changed if they are torn or soiled  Remove glove by peeling off so that outside of glove (soiled portion) is now inside

Wash those hands! The end
