Doffing PPE (with PAPR) 12/23/14

1. Requires that the trained observer be donned in level 1 PPE *This associate will read aloud each step of the doffing procedure and assure that each step is completed safely and accurately. 2. The trained observer will assist with removal of the PAPR PPE from the contaminated associate. *When the trained observer’s hands come in contact with the contaminated associate PPE they must immediately disinfect their gloved hands. 3. Proper protocol for removal of all level 1 PPE is required of trained observer Preparation

Visually inspect PPE Visually inspect outside of PPE for gross contamination If present, use bleach wipes to remove Discard bleach wipes in red biohazard bag *Sanitize gloved hands with alcohol based hand sanitizer and allow to dry completely.

Red Biohazard Bag Trained observer will spread red biohazard bag open on top of plastic drape on floor Associate will stand in red bag to doff PPE

Outer Gown or Apron  Trained observer unties ties  Cross arms in front of body & grasp gown shoulder seam of opposite side.  Pull gown down slowly & pull arms through sleeve while holding outside of gown.  Stop at wrists & remove gloves as shown with remainder of gown  Drop gown & gloves into biohazard bag.

Inner Gloves Inspect gloves for signs of contamination and use bleach wipe to wipe off gloves if visibly contaminated If holes or tears are present, remove gloves and sanitize hands with alcohol based hand sanitizer and apply new gloves. *If gloves are intact, sanitize gloved hands with alcohol sanitizer. If observer assisted with gown removal sanitizes gloved hand Allow gloves to dry before proceeding

Remove PAPR 1.Associate unbuckles belt while trained observer disconnects blower tubing and removes reusable PAPR components placing them in designated area. 2. Associate removes and discards disposable PAPR hood into red bag

Sanitize Gloved Hands Both observer and associate sanitize gloved hands with alcohol hand sanitizer after PAPR removal *Allow gloves to dry before proceeding.

Remove Detached Hood If detached hood is worn, bend over and remove hood. Sanitize gloved hands.

Remove Coveralls Pull open adhesive strip and unzip all the way Pull hood back and away from face *Trained observer pulls suit down from neck and shoulder to past the buttocks Associate sits to remove the remainder of coveralls, boot covers, and inner gloves

Glove and Hand Sanitize 1.Trained observer sanitizes their gloved hands after assisting with coverall removal 2.Trained observers puts alcohol sanitizer on the associates hands. *Allow to dry before proceeding.

Remove Bouffant/Shower Cap  Apply new gloves  Remove cap away from your face  Place in red biohazard bag

Sanitize gloved hands Sanitize gloves with alcohol hand sanitizer. Allow gloves to dry before proceeding.

Remove Gloves Grasp outside of glove with opposite hand; peel off Hold removed glove in gloved hand Slide finger of ungloved hand under remaining glove at the wrist Peel glove off hand over first glove Discard gloves into red biohazard bag

Hand Hygiene Trained observer puts alcohol sanitizer on associate’s hands. *Allow hands to dry completely.

Shoe Removal 1.Step out of shoes as you step off plastic drape 2.Put on a pair surgical shoe covers over your socks to leave the doffing area.

Hand Hygiene After leaving doffing area the associate washes hands with soap and water.

Shoe Disinfection Trained observer will place shoes in designated tote and cover all surfaces of the shoes with bleach wipes *Bleach wipes must have contact time 5 minutes with shoes.

Red Biohazard Bag Trained observer will close biohazard bag and follow facility protocol for disposition.
